I might need to add this to my signature, I can't stop laughing at it. very funny, not sure how accurate but funny."I mean no disrespect, but c'mon, most guys here sweat gravy and pant on the way to the fridge." -@sodigthisbigcrux

Since he has an igloo and it wasn't mentioned, why not a door for the igloo? Most dog houses can have some sort of plastic door installed and keep a lot of the dogs heat inside. That's a pretty simple solution if possible.
-
I thought about adding a plastic door to the igloo, but I have a buddy building him a wood house with insulation, a door, and a heat lamp installed in it.
My goal is to have him nice and comfy during those cold winter nights.Louisville, GA - 2 Large BGE's -
Just make sure he stays dry and the opening of his dog house door is not facing to the north. One time, I tried to mount a light I'm my dogs house to keep it warm in the winter. One night, He chewed the darn thing off the wall and it threw the circuit breaker in my house. My dog lived for 16 years outside and he did just fine.Dave - Austin, TX

http://www.petland.ca/k-h-lectro-kennel-heated-pad.htmlI have this electric pad and our dog liked it or at least she used it when it was plugged in. She was allowed inside when where home in the winter but when we weren't she was in our work shed where she had free access to come and go, we have 2 1/2 acres and she wasn't a car chaser so there was no need to confine her. The shed sheltered from the weather but had no heat but this heated mat provided her comfort. Sadly she died about year ago at the ripe old age of 18.

Any way you could move the doghouse next to the main house and pipe in some warm air from the garage? A small window fan blowing out of the garage, and a dryer exhaust hose into the dog house?Kind of a hair brained idea, but you have a big mass of warm air in the house...might find a way to share it w/ the dog.1 LBGE in Chapel Hill, NC

There are heated mats for standing on in cold garages and for melting snow that might work well to warm the floor of the dog house. They are also designed to be outdoors and therefore less of a fire risk than some solutions. You'd have to check and see what temp the mats operate at. If it is something safe like 70* it might make for a nice toasty solution.Cooking on an XL and Medium in Bethesda, MD.

May be a little late, but an idea is to use a small Boatsafe bile heater, automatically turns on at 40 and off at 55.

johnkitchensI've used this product with much success over the years for my Malinios. Although he stays in the house at night, he resides in his 10x20 kennel during the days. Late fall and winter days can get pretty chilly in NC. The dog house is insulated and has a "malinios proof" heater inside. I line the bottom with cedar. It's pricey, but it's built to last and like I said, it's proven to be "mal proof" for 4 years.Jay

Welcome! :o3 Post your pooch on "Man's Best Friend" thread.
@johnkitchens I think the plan you have with your buddy building the house with insulated door etc you described will work perfectly fine for your area of the country. IMHOLBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL -

I recommend the Maverick for monitoring temperatures remotely. One probe for monitoring temperature of the dog house, and a modified rectal probe with the alarm set for hypothermia alerts. )

@ NPHuskerFLThanks for the welcome. I've been egg'n for a long time, just never "jumped in" the forum. This forum has been a great source of information and entertainment over the years!I will post some pictures of my boy (Kyro) when I get home. After owning high drive labs, I thought I knew what HIGH DRIVE dogs/breeds were...... then I got a malinios! I love to see him work protection! Definitely peace of mind when I'm away from home..... he's very protective (and affectionate) with my girls! Thanks for sharing your pics. Beautiful dog!Jay

I don't know if Sam would like being totally closed up in the dog den. Even on very cold mornings he keeps his head either on the edge or out of the igloo. I think he may be claustrophobic!
The only time he will get totally all the way in and to the back of the igloo is when there is a blowing rain.Louisville, GA - 2 Large BGE's -
I was stationed in Valdosta at Moody AFB and it snowed.
If you love your dog as much as you say and you consider him part of the family.

Another option would be to get him a neoprene vest or go with a full on body suit.Large and Small BGECentral, IL

just read the report that one of your breed was the only 4 legged member of the SEAL 6 team that took out Bin Laden! I'm sincerely impressed! -
Just buy him a mini bge and light it every night and stick it in there with him. Then use it the next morning to cook breakfast.
