Indiana Skeeter,
I don't what the minimum safe distance is. I have had an umbrella within 6 inches of the daisy wheel with no ill effects. Just don't let it touch the egg.
Here was my Thanksgiving turkey cook.[p][p]John

Indiana Skeeter,
I just bought a new egg three weeks ago and I live in Florida. Definitely not the sunshine state now. Of course I want to use it every day soooooooo. You cook with the top shut of course, right? Or you know, the daisy is on there too. I held the umbrella myself when I was out there and held it arms length above it when I was working on it. I would suggest to put it to the side and get drenched for a minute if you open the lid to flip the steaks. Rain sucks when you want to cook out doesn't it? Good luck. I AM just a newbie but have already tried. A few feet with it closed and the daisy, I would say.

Indiana Skeeter,
Your best bet is the "shanty caps" they sell at Lowes ... I think they are about $8. It's a roof vent that slips right over the egg and keeps the air flow going and the rain out. I'll try to get a picture of mine. It was misting yesterday down in Madison, IN ... kinda sucked for cookin out but everything sure tasted good.[p]Doug

Smoked Signals,
I'm too cheap to spend the $8! I take a square of foil, roll two opposite corners into legs and tuck them into the daisy wheel. It makes a little bonnet that works fine.[p]Paul
