@McFire21, I agree don't make the decision on a XL just over a pizza. Went with the XL, because I sometimes cook over 20 burgers, 10 steaks, 2 pork butts, 2 briskets and 2 big turkeys. How big a family do you have. There is three of use, but we have a large extender family and a lot of friends. That's another reason I bought the XL. Both are a good choice.

Any chance you are also interested in baking artisan bread? Just a thought since pizza is a goal. If so, the XL is nice because you can fit 2 normal size boules on the XL BGE stone at the same time. My typical dough makes 2 boules, so It fits nicely.

I've done 'za on XL and L and for some reason, the results always seem to be best on the LG.  Get the adjustable rig, rig extender and get that stone hi up in the dome, I also have a plate separator in the form of an oval stone from CGS which serves as a second stone in the BGE which, surprisingly, is excellent at starting the 'za and then I put it on the upper stone to finish the toppings.

the upper stone does radiate heat to the lower level but I have a system of always rotating pies from the lower, to the upper then starting another on the lower.  there is also a separator between the fire and the lower stone too- this is in the form of spider and a round stone from CGS.  this system isn't depicted here as this photo is from an earler pizza cook on June 6 of this year.  I've done the dual stone, rotating pizza cook since and the results are fantastic

    lotsa fun!

  • Nothing wrong with a large doing pies!

Large egg is a good size for pizza. I don't own a bigger egg, but I can say a bigger pie could get unwieldy.
