Setup question

Hi all - I had my XL BGE built in by my contractor. A couple quick questions.

1) they did not install the gasket tape on the metal cap. If there a proper way/place to do this, or will anywhere on the cap do the job?

2) the cutout the contractor made for the lower air vent is too small to clean effectively. I am going to have him come back and extend the opening by half a brick on each side (see pictures below), does their need to be additional height here as well? I want to be sure I am allowing for ample air flow.

Thanks.

Gasket on Miss Daisey not needed unless you don't have the ceramic rain bonnet to snuff your fire. Even with a gasket Miss D is a poor snuffer! Consider buying a S/S SmokeWare cap to replace both. As for the clean out that opening looks big enough- you just need a cleaner with a longer handle which is easy to fabricate.

@RRP, what is the web site for the SS Smokeware caps?
I had it when I bought my original, but I've managed to lose it.

Shop vac for ashes. And FWIW the only other issue I could foresee with the sculpted mortar opening is difficulty attaching a blower for a future pit controller. I can only visualize by the pics provided so, maybe it won't be an issue (just appears it could be).

I'd make the bottom access much larger if nothing else just for air flow. Hella nice setup

  • thanks all for the responses.  the Smokeware SS cap, is it effective in the rain?  And is the fit more secure so that the gasket tape on the cap is not needed?  thanks.
  • Greenwave, you put the tape around the throat of the egg and the vent fits snugly over it, when you open the egg the vent does not move and the position that you have the vent open to does not change... yes you can use it in the rain. It is worth the investment in my opinon.

it is VERY effective in the rain! Look at the picture again. I suppose if you are in a hard wind driven sideways rain storm it MIGHT be impacted???as for the gasket the SmokeWare comes with a strip of gasket which I strongly suggest you apply to the inside of the neck of the SmokeWare and NOT the BGE dome as the instructions say. If you need a picture I will be glad to post it. If your egg already has a gasket around the neck of the dome it really needs to come off...trust me!
