First of all let me say hello, new here.
Just had to tell you all how I ended the day monday as a "egghead"??, thanks to my wife!
It started off with a rough morning because of the night before. So I figured what better way to fix this then to fire up the old char. grill pit with some beef kabobs! So I went to cleaning out the old briskets (as always). Well in this process of scraping, the bottom fell out because of rust, lol, (Third time in 10 years). So went to tell her that we need to go out and find a new smoker, and that I wanted a Brickman like a buddy of mine has with some thick steel. At about 10am we arrive at Lowes and start looking around. Well of course thing they have is fimsy for char. But I was willing to go ahead and pick one up. Hehe, then my lovely wife comes around the corner from the plant dept., and sees my disappointment.
So she suggest they we should look at some other stores, and she belives that she knows of a specialty store close buy.
So we pull upto this patio / outdoor store, and proceed to walk in. Well all we see is about 10 different fancy gas grills (500 to 2000 price range). I dont do gas, might as well cook on the stove! So I the manager if he has any good charcoal grills. His reply is that they only sell one kind which is called the Big Green Egg. So her and I are laughing on our way over to it. He expains it to us for quite a bit, about floors us with the price it, and says that its the only one they use to cook with at the store on saturdays. Tells us about the "cult like" following that the BGE has. Plus I got to speak with a "Egghead" customer who just happened to walk in, to get some supplies.
Well my wife and I are outside talking it over by ourselves for about 45 mins, when she says that shes cool with it aslong as I consider it my fathers day and B-day present (shes 7 months now, first child)!!
So who am I to refuse an offer like that, we bought it :)!!
Took it home, few minutes of const., and fire it up. Had smoke pouring all over the place, lol, heard about 4 neighbours closing their windows. Tossed on the kabobs, 20 mins pass, and ate the best damn meat I've ever cooked!!
So I just wanted to say hello, and hope to meet some of ya some time soon (would like to see some of the tricks of the trade).
The name is Frank, and we live in Raliegh, NC[p]Now its time head to the meat dept., later!!!

vincent,[p]Great Story! And welcome to the Forum. You will get all the help (and more) you need to get yourself to being an egg-o-maniac in short order.[p]My wife got me a BGE egg for Christmas, complete surprise for me. So as you might guess, I had to keep her. It's cool though, I let her know that that is the reason I let her stay in "the big house", so long as she keeps doin' da laundry. Heeeee[p]No, she is a good egg (sic) and I couldn't imagine life without her... [p]Good luck to you and yours with the family.[p]Cajun

vincent, Welcome onboard from Ireland. Yes Egg heads not only come from all walks of life, but from all over the world, and we all came to know the EGG in different ways. My short story is that I was working in a very classy hotel which the owners closed to renovate and replace all the equipment in the hotel. They offered all staff members a pick of any piece of equipment they liked from the hotel, and I got lucky and put my name down for the B G E before anybody else. The EGG was considered "mine" by the other staff anyway, because I did all the cooking for corporate barbeques and entertainment on the EGG so I had a moral right to it. That was the start of a long and satisfactory relationship, which has developed over the last 5/6 years.
Welcome, and enjoy your EGG and the forum.

    vincent,
I can just see myself standing there after a long night staring at that rusted out cooker saying oh ****. But, you got my kind of girl!

  • vincent,
Don't forget the plate setter ... you will need it to duplicate the low and slow indirect cooking.[p]Welcome aboard.

  • vincent,
Congrats on both new life altering events! I've been egging here outside Asheville for five years. I also have a son at NCSU. He's also a waiter at P F Changs at Crabtree Valley Mall (ask for Linc ).Since you have ventured into eggdom , it may be a while befre you go out to eat again.

  • vincent,[p] Sometimes God just puts you in the right place at the right time. You'll never look back after cooking on the egg for a while. You need to attend an eggfest (there are a number of them around the east coast) to meet other "eggheads" and learn the tricks. Just a couple of words to the wise. Buy your pants and belts 2 sizes larger from now on, and listen to the guys and gals who are on the forum. There is a great wealth of experience out here and eggers are very willing to share their knowledge. [p] You might want to go to the Naked Whiz' website. http://www.nakedwhiz.com. He has lots and lots of good information and recipes. Also look at http://www.dizzypig.com for some great rubs.[p]

vincent,[p]Awesome Story.. I got my egg in March and it's my Birthday, Father's Day, Anvers, Chritmas Gift... Glad it worked out for you.
  • JSlot,
No , I dont belive it was TNW. I saw his photo on his web site after eating that first night (ran upstairs to check it out after first meal). Think TNW lives about 20 mins south of us by the looks of his site. Looking foward to seeing his table/'s plus this guru thing though.[p]Frank S.

  • vincent, We women know about what cooks best. I went ahead and bought one on my own. It IS the best. Three weeks and have used it every night but two. Good luck with your baby! Enjoy her til she's a teenager!
