Has anybody cooked with a BGE in a tiki hut? We are planning on building one but not sure if the smoke of the egg gets trapped in it so any advice welcome

Just be careful of the sparks.

A long time egger named WessB built one on the back side of his home or at least that is what he called it. It probably was far more structurely sound and less flameable than a thatch roofed tiki if that's what you really mean.

Are you going to do a true thatch roof or will the under side be covered with wood? I wouldn't suggest it under a straight thatch. Here's a shot of my hut and I constantly check the heat out the top especially on a pizza cook or a clean burn. I wouldn't want a thatch roof over mine.Bristow Virginia XL&Mini One of the best feelings in life is watching other people enjoy the food I cooked!

looks like an incident in the making...

Yet people put grills in there all the time just wondering what is the difference

Most modern tikis have a normal roof with the decorative thatch over it which would be fine. I wouldn't put any form of fire under a true fully dried out thatch hut unless it had very high ceiling height. If you are 6+ foot from the top of the closed egg to the closest thatch I can't imagine you having trouble. Smoke would tend to get caught due to the pitch of the roof though. You have to pitch a tiki roof for thatch to work for weather protection.XL, Small, Mini & Mini Max Green Egg, Shirley Fab Trailer, 6 gal and 2.5 gal Cajun Fryers, BlueStar 60" Range, 48" Lonestar Grillz Santa Maria, Alto Shaam 1200s, Gozney Dome, Gateway 55g Drum

We have a 24' x 18' thatch Tiki behind our home. When the Seminoles constructed it for us they recommended we DO NOT use the egg under it. We put a slab just outside the Tiki for the egg and cover it with a duck cover.

Here in our area of So-Cal those are known as Palapas. Plan on a re-thatch of the roof annually or thereabouts, and the vermin are attracted to them as well (palm rats). Yes....flammable.When I'm not Eggin', I'm scootin' Eggin' and 'cueing from Temecula Ca; an hour from San Diego, an hour and five minutes from Palm Springs, and an hour and a half from Los Angeles (yeah, right. With THAT traffic?)

I live in Indiana so a true thatched roof was not an option. I built a small table and put a faux thatch on it. It holds up fine. I am always cautious to make sure there is a little air movement for high heat burns just to be safe though.
