Smoke from Bottom Vent

Is it unusual to have smoke puffs come from the bottom vent? I did a low and slow Butt the other day with three large hickory chunks and while getting it to temp there were intermittent puffs. I had cleaned the bottom out before I started.

i believe its the dust from new lump igniting, ive seen flames shoot out the lower vent at startup, espellially when shutting the lid

I've had it happen a few times when the top is closed off quite a bit. Not enough smoke can escape out the top so it comes out the bottom. No biggie. How was the pork butt?XL BGE, LG BGE, and a hunger to grill everything in sight!!!Joe- Strongsville, OH

I get it during low and slows. The smoke comes out like little "puffs" as if the egg is breathing. This is durning cooking, not just start-up.

what you have might be different from what ive seen. my egg growls, the lid chatters, then it huffs and breaths fire thru the lower vent
) only seen it a few times, maybe my egg thinks its above cooking a lowly hotdog

I've seen this with a L+S on a breezy day if a gust hits my smokeware cap because the vents are on the side. But only L+S where there isn't a strong draft.

Check your screen following that occurrence. I had mine covered on the inside with creosote or "gunk" that impeded air flow on a subsequent cook and wouldn't let temperature get high enough. I suspect it had happened several times to plug the screen.
