Large to XL - What Accessories To Get?

I've had a Large for about 3 years now. Considering getting an XL. What do you consider the advantages of XL over a Large and what accessories should I consider for the XL. Thanks for feedback.

  • My buddy just bought an XL and sold me his large, unless someone corrects me there is less to choose from in the way of accessories, however he wouldn't trade his XL for anything. Hmmmm, he said that about the large as well.

Advantage is larger cooking grid to fit larger and/more cuts of meat. Or really big pizzas. With the larger grid, not as many accessories exist, but then again not as many are needed. I would suggest just starting out with a way to go indirect, then build from there, since you already have the essentials. If you start with the plate setter another nice thing is the Adjustable Rig from Ceramic Grill Store can work with the PS.

In my XL I first added a homemade raised second grid, then recently a Spider. I'm sure at some point I'll add an AR.

They have damn near all the same accessories. Only thing I have ever wanted for my XL I can't find is the kick ash basket. (Don't feel any need for a high que fire grate on the XL because the holes are larger but if you do there are other options.) The advantage is flexibility. The XL is much more flexible. Space gives you options. Also, I feel airflow is better because the fire grate, draft door and surface area of the coal are all so much larger. I LOVE my XL.

Woo2, AR, CI grids, stones,  are all available for the XL, just bigger. The advantage is space.  I often cook for our extended family of 9 so it is perfect for us.  Maybe because I have had my XL the longest, I feel it is the most reliable performer.

Skip the plate setter, get a woo and 18" pizza stone from CGS. Or an AR. For a thorough clean out, I just lift the fire grate out. Lump reducing ring is nice, but you have a large. Love my XL

  • I can use my large accessories in my xl, if they have something other than the fire ring to rest on. I actually like my xl for pizza best. Put in the xl platesetter, then another platesetter from one of the other eggs, then the pizza stone. Puts the pizza right below the dome for nice cooking on the top side of the pizza (I have the squatty dome xl), and the edges of the pizza aren't in the danger zone to burn the edges like my medium and large are.

The large may have more accessories, but it is the most popular egg, and the xl doesn't need as many because it cooks big without cooking in layers.
