My Cedar Table is Nearly Finished

Tomorrow the granite top for my table will be delivered and I'll set the egg into place. I wanted to post this photo to test my posting ability, and to show off the varnished cedar before the granite hides some of it. I'll post another item later with photos of construction and the egg in place after the granite is installed. I hand cut 16 mortise and tenons to join the 4X4s together, and used a Kreg jig for slot screws for other joints, including the 1X6s that make up the panels. The cedar was expensive, but the result is worth it, I think.

Thanks. I read nearly every post on this forum topic before I got started. What a help that was in deciding how to proceed. I also viewed a lot of YouTube videos to learn the techniques that I needed to use for the project. Tomorrow I will see if I calculated the right height for the shelf for the egg. It will rest on the small nest for the egg, which will be on circular the cutout from the granite top.

Looks great. I've got a cedar table awaiting a granite top as well. Haven't been able to find a piece of remnant close enough to the right size though.

Very nice Newsguy. What brand of cedar stain did you use for the table?2x Kamado Joe Big Joes + Cyber Q Wifi + Themapen - Pizza Steel + BGE Paella Pan + BGE Ash Tools + Woo2 + Open Bar Fire Ring

I finished the table with marine spar varnish. It really brings out and slightly darkens the various hues of the cedar. Most of the weather-exposed pieces have four or five coats, with light sanding between coats. It gives it a look like a boat might have, or a cedar strip canoe. I will return with some photos of the final product with the granite installed sometime after it arrives tomorrow morning.

It looks like you spent the extra coin for the knot free clear cedar. That must have impacted your budget. I'm suprised how red some of the cedar turned with the spar. It almost looks like you used a Sikken 077 cedar stain underneath.Newsguy said:I finished the table with marine spar varnish. It really brings out and slightly darkens the various hues of the cedar. We'll have to see the table with the ganite on.

Yes, the cedar was labeled clear, I believe. There are some small knots in the 1X6s, but they are tight. I was able to sort through the pieces at a local lumber yard to find the best ones. The 1X6s were planed on three sides, but the back was rough cut. I rented a thickness planer to deal with slight warping on many of those pieces. The red is only the wood through the varnish. There are some white cedar pieces that you can't see on the back and inside.

Beautiful, bet you burned through some sandpaper! Would love to see some woodworking progress pictures, especially of the mortise and tenons.

The granite for my table was delivered at 8 yesterday morning. To my relief my calculations were all on the money. The hole in the granite (21 1/2" diameter) has about 1/2" clearance all round. The Egg sits high enough above the granite to give me 1/2" clearance below the opened hinge. The Egg is a safe distance from the 4X4s that are the top rail of the table (about 1 1/2"). At the last moment I decided to place the granite cut-out that I'm using under the table nest on the feet that came with the Egg to give a little air space under the stone. Without that, the hinge would have hit the top when opened. So...here are some photos of the completed table with granite on and Egg ensconced. I will include some photos from the building process in a different comment post--specifically of mortise and tenons as requested by Drunkonmeat. I shot hundreds, but I'll post only a selection. Later I will make a slide show of the construction photos and put it on YouTube or Vimeo.

Thanks for the kind comments. I am truly proud of the table. It took a lot of hours and labor, not to mention a respectable number of bucks, but the satisfaction was worth all the time and expense. Here are some photos I shot at various points along the way to getting it finished.
