We found this and want to fix it up to sell. It weighs a ton and I threw my back out picking it up and loading it in my van. Not a smart move but it's NICE. We bought JB Weld to glue the fire box back together and want to know if that is the right thing to do. It is missing the bottom vent (damper) but that is it. Any and all advice welcome. It sits about 34 inches with the top on and takes an 18 inch grill. If we fix this up what can we ask for it? Should we get stove black and paint it? Is it worth fixing up or should we sell it as is?  Also any clue on the manufacturer and time period made?

Not sure on value, restoration details, etc. However JB Weld High Heat epoxy is only rated to 450* continuous, 500* intermittent. I used JB Weld on my plate setter for my small egg and it worked great until I used it to bake a deep dish pizza. I knew better, just wasn't thinking. The JBW let loose and I've got a 2 piece plate setter...

Anyway, point is the firebox will be exposed to higher heat than JBW will probably be able to handle. If the cooker is ceramic, the user will probably want the ability to sear, etc at high temps. I believe Rutland has a higher temp adhesive available, but I have not used it personally.

I'm sure @Richard FL will be along soon enough and he will probably know what you have there as well as restoration tips.

Question though, why do you want to sell it? Why not use it to get into ceramic cooking? If you want to know why, just look around at some of the excellent food that is produced by a ceramic cooker.

If you do want to move it, where are you located?

@Cindym Is the top attached to the bottom with a hinge or does it just sit on the bottom?

It's attached with hinges. The tiny top on the top is not attached

I just looked up Rutland and found out we have a bit of that on hand from working on our woodstove.

To repair the firebox try Furnace Cement & Fireplace Mortar.

@CindyM Sorry to hear, good to know you already have a ceramic.

FWIW my BIL lives about 2 hours away from you. If the timing had been right, I might have been interested in picking that up from you and fixing it up for a project while visiting them. But alas won't be out that way again until next summer sometime. Would have liked to have helped out and also have a project while there.

Too bad we missed each other. Your brother inlaw is welcome to ship it to you. LOL This would be a pain to ship for sure.

@CindyM Yeah, shipping these isn't all that practical. I would have fixed it up and taught them to use it.

The "ears" on the dome rule out LBGE and Imperial Kamado. If you look closely at the front of the dome (where an Egg has a thermometer) do you see any design like a mountain?

No design just what appears to be Japanese writing. The bottom front looks like a label was there at some point in time

Yeah, that's not a BGE. Is it ceramic or clay?

Edt: Nevermind, I see it is ceramic.

How can you tell it's ceramic?

In order to make it usable as a kamado a new or replacement firebox will be needed. Fabbing a damper door would be a piece of cake. Id paint it, make a damper for it, buy it a firebox and USE and enjoy it. It'll likely reward you more than"flipping" it, if that could be done profitably.

@CindyM Don't know for sure, but looking at the cracks in the firebox and the interior it looks like ceramic (which would be preferable).

I bought an old (1997) ceramic grill dome. I tried jb on the ring and firebox. ..didn't work. I think the ceramic is so different the weld wouldn't attach. Be wary.

We will return the JB and use the stuff for the fireplace. It's worth a try as I cannot invest in a new firebox at this point in time.  We are not keeping this for sure but want to maybe fix it up a bit. Where can I find a new damper for it? Anyone know?

Have you seen any of grandkvisten's video's on you tube?  I know very little about him other than he is an egger with a penchant for metal fabrication.

You should watch all of his egg video's, but here is a link to his firebox repair:

Desmo888 I will check out the video!  thank you.

BYS1981 We love it here. We are on 5 acres in North Auburn. Lots of privacy. We use propane here but only for hot water. For heat we use our wood stove. My husband is a Forester so we get wood for free

Oh and Richard  Thank you Thank you everyone who has helped. I got a message from the Egg Guy in the bay area telling me these are notorious for cracking due to age and it was not worth putting any money in to. We do plan to fix it up as our other one is from the 60's and has not cracked yet. In fact everything is original on it

That video was fantastic. We can do that no problem. I am wondering what he used at the end to coat the firebox. Do you have any clue?
