Getting my new Large BGE Home this Saturday HELP !!!
Hoosier_Patriot
Posts: 51
Hey EggHeads,
I need some helpful info. I'm driving from Indy to the Porkopolis Egg Festival in Cincinnati this Saturday. I would rather drive my 2006 RDX than my 2004 Nissan Quest. I think that, with the back seat folded down, I can fit a large BGE and basic nest no problem.
Has anyone out there transported a large BGE in an Acura RDX? Or (if no one has) do you think I could transport one in my RDX? The vertical clearance on the hatch is 33 inches and the horizontal clearance is 50 inches or so. With the back seats folded down the depth is over 50 inches.
I know the Quest can handle the BGE no problem but I prefer to drive my Acura.
Any thoughts?

This should help. Although its likely not in a box if its a demo.
A large assembled whould likely fit on the back seat. The egg itself is under 33" high. Just bring a socket set incase you have to take the nest apart.

Here's mine back when we brought her home in my Yukon. I don't think you'll have any issues.
And welcome aboard!Slumming it in Aiken, SC. -
Jeremiah,Wish I had a Yukon about now…Eggdam,Yes my egg will already be assembled as it is a demo I am making the trek to Cincy because I'm saving about 18% on the price of my egg because it gets used for a few hours as a demo at this EggFest there (but I still get the full warrantee). I've looked up the external dimensions of a large BGE and there shouldn't be any problem getting it to fit. Thanks all,HP

Transported my large in a Rav4. I just strapped the large in the passenger seat w/seatbelt. Put the nest in the back. Oh I also took all the guts out and folded in newspaper and packing bubbles.

@ TarheelMattThanks Bro! The Rav 4 and the RDX are very similar in size and I like the idea of the egg being in the passenger seat, with the seatbelt (and airbags God forbid). I've got some extra straps with me so I might just run one around the egg / seat for extra security.I'm going to bring some unused drop cloths and I get the Wall Street Journal every day so I've got TONS of newspaper lying around. I'll bring a big plastic storage tub to put the wrapped "guts" of the egg into for transport … do you think I'll need one or two tubs?
-
Don't forget it is still going to be cooling down, but still hot. I'm pretty sure they'll also remove any hot coals prior to you leaving.
-
@hoosier_patriot I would make sure they cannot hit each other, so two tubs. I just laid a furniture blanket down in the rear and wrapped the fire box and ring separately and place on the floor. The grate I didn't worry about as its cast iron.
Should be good to go though. I about an hour like that with no problems. That was the easy part, putting it in and getting it out by yourself is a pain. You will need help.

@hoosier_patriot - I got my LBGE about 2 weeks ago and it fit just fine in my Nissan Rogue. Loading it was a cinch as I had help. Getting it back out and into the nest by myself was "fun." My 3-year old was laughing watching me waddle from the car to the garage with it in my arms
Like others have said, I just took out the fire box, ring, and grate and set those in the floorboards while I just laid the Egg on it's side and strapped it down. Didn't even have to lay the seats down.

Just be careful wheeling it around in the nest. Always pull it, never push it. And buy the nest handler if you can.
-
LOL, I'm leaving the misses home too!
-
I took mine home in my back seat strapped in by seatbelt 07' F150 SCAB. It will ride perfectly. For cleanliness sake, bring a blanket (shipping is best) to wrap it in to keep errant ash from attacking your upholstery. See you at porkopolisI cook. I eat. I repeat. Thornville, Ohio

Hey Hibby,Thanks for the info, definitely taking my RDX.Off the wall question… Is there a Handel's Ice Cream anywhere near the Porkopolis gathering?
-
One last question, if you take out the "innards" of a large BGE and just have the base and lid, how much does that bad boy weigh?
-
Here is my smoking hot egg just chill'n in the back of my RDX ... Thanks all for steering me in the right direction ...

They tell you no high heat at first so I'm smoking a brisket and cooking some cod right now! Can't wait to try my 1st smoked cod...
-
I strapped mine into the backseat of a 1996 accord. I would say you will have a lot more room in an MDX.

Congrats !! I had a 30 mile drive with my egg when I bought it. During the drive every bump the eggmates would bang off the side of the egg and I would hear pieces clanking ! I think I had an ulcer by the time I got home !! Everything survived. That egg is stronger than it seems !!Danville, Il
