Bought two butts for a 50th Anniversary party and I have a question

I bought them Thursday. Last night i started prepping them about 8:30 and one of them smelled very strongly like rotten eggs. The other one had no strange odor at all. The smell was so strong my wife noticed it in the fridge earlier in day. So I went out and bought another from the grocery store. I called the butcher shop just now, and they said that is a normal occurrence  because I had kept it in the fridge. I felt like it was going bad, what are your thoughts and experiences?
Thank you in advance.

It is not uncommon for cryovaced meat to have a bad odor when first opened. This usually goes away in a short time.

If you are in doubt you should take the meat back to where you bought it and get a refund or exchange.

Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.

It was not cryovaced when I got it. They are in a case. They wrap them in butcher paper. I washed it, trimmed it up a bit. but the smell would not go away. It has been in my fridge since I got it and the fridge smells like it. I just smelled it and it has still not gone away after more than 13 hours.

+1 with return it-"the nose knows" and if the smell doesn't dissipate a few minutes after rinsing then don't mess with it.

I'd chunk it. Was the second one in contact with it? It'd suck to poison your party. They've made it 50 years. ..let's not ruin it.

It was not ever in direct contact. The other one smelled fine the whole time. Took it back they kept telling me it was fine but wanted me to be happy so they gave me a store credit. I will be doing a brisket next week. Thanks for the advice all.

Return it or trash it, like Lousubcap said, "the nose knows" Pork goes bad fast.

  • I always smell meat before using. If it's has any type of odor, it goes back for a refund or replacement.

First and foremost Happy 50th Anniversary to you & your wife! That's awesome :-)

Agree with the general consensus here. If the smell doesn't dissipate within a few minutes, it's best to do exactly as you've done.
