I have 4 bags of Fogo waiting to be cracked open. If that's what some of the pieces look like, I might save them for my tandoor.

In my experience, the big pieces in bags of Fogo are well carbonized.  I have a hammer that I keep at the ready.  It doesn't take much of a tap to break them up into smaller chunks.

By the way, the price of Fogo is on the move again.  After months at $45, it was down to $41 today.  I still have several bags, so I can wait for it to get lower.  I think I'll buy a few bags if/when it goes below $36.  How's that for a random number?

Yup, the other side of that log had the side split off and you could see it was wee carbonized.

I still like the BGE/RO better but this stuff does burn longer, with less ash, and has HUGE pieces!

ROCKWOOD fans... can you explain the difference to me?  (corey24 & Thatgrimguy)
I have heard a lot of praise, but not specifics.

Being relatively new to lump I have only tried BGE, RO and FOGO.
As you know BGE and RO are the same.  I like them.  Lights easily.  Good flavor.  No complaints.
It wasn't until I tried that FOGO that I realized extreme differences in burn time.  I seem to get almost twice the burn time out of a full fire box of FOGO.  Not that RO burns fast, but wow...big difference.
Thing is, FOGO is harder to light and I don't like the flavor it leaves on long smokes compared to RO.  Personal preference I'm sure and it is clearly a high quality lump with a lot of care given to it.  And who knows, I've only had one bag of it and it could be a bad batch.

I have been to the Naked Whiz lump review page, of course, which is awesome. But that is still one opinion and doesn't have a lot of A vs. B comparison.

I did shop for Rockwood but...I suppose I limited my shopping to Amazon Prime and didn't see any Rockwood.  It is not available locally that I know of.  (I'm in MD, northwest of DC.)

In a few days I'm going to put this to rest. I ordered both rockwood and Ozark oak from fire craft the oo was on backorder but has now shipped. I will light all three med eggs at the same time and do a cook and then will put in my findings. Oh the third lump will be bge. Now do we go low and slow or 700 to sear steaks?

It's got to be a low and slow cook if you are going to compare the flavor!

    Look forward to it!

Low and slow it is then. I will post results.

Where are you located? I live in Frederick and there is a new dealer that will apparently be carrying it. I bought a bunch in a group buy so I haven't been to check them out.

@KiterTodd - could you clarify - that giant log IS carbonized all the way through?   I just didn't understand you comment.  Thanks

nolaegghead, it is carbonized all the way through.  Lots of big pieces in the bag, this is just one of them.

PNWFoodie, you can see my chimney in the background.  I do get it to light and it burns great.  If you go to the naked whiz FOGO review he noticed the same thing.  BGE/RO will light for me if I only add paper to the chimney once.  I usually have to add it twice (sometimes 3 times) to Fogo...but it goes.  Just slows down those mid-week cooks when I want to get things on the grill before the family goes berzerk with hunger!  :)

Naked Whiz review - "Lighting the charcoal was a bit tough, taking 5 sheets of newspaper in our chimney starter test. This is high compared to other brands. While the charcoal was starting in the chimney, there was no sparking and just a few pops.'

    I'm in Germantown,
Eggcelsior!  A local buy or distributor would be great.  I only need one bag, though (already have plenty to get through first)

    Great responses, thanks!

I light FOGO with the looftlighter or a starter cube and I haven't had any trouble.  It does light a bit easier if there is some used lump mixed in.

I bought my last bag of FOGO when it was at $28 and have just about finished it.  I'm not ordering more until it's at least under $35.  Firecraft order is on the way in the meantime.  Firecraft is awesome.

I was thinking about trying it but I'm with you. I won't get it unless I can go $1/lb or less.

Fogo (and everything else) lights without any issue in seconds using the MAP weed torch.  As far as a flavor, I find it to be very smoke neutral - much more so than royal oak.  Out here in the peoples republic of California, we can't get Rockwood or OO - I'd like to give them a try.  For now, my go to is Fogo.

As far as carbonized all the way through, that means that the big chunks are all charcoal - no raw wood.  When you split it with a hammer, the big chunks are all usable lump.

Thanks for your response. I don't use a chimney...I've got the looflighter and it lights quick as can be.

I have a looftlighter too, and thought it was fabulous.  I remembered I had a Map Torch hiding in my tool box, so I tried that - Wow!! Then thought maybe those guys with the weed torches are on to something.  The weed torch is incredible!!  The looftlighter sits forlornly at the bottom of my BBQ stuff box.
