Proper way to setup/use the BGE grid extender?

I just got one of these from a local dealer for $21, wanted to try it for some raised direct cooking(spatchcock chickens and turkeys intially). It does not seem to raise things up very much, and if I try and raise it higher by bringing the legs closer together, it gets more unstable. Is there a trick to use when setting this up? I remember reading somewhere that someone said you had to "spring it tight", not sure what they meant by that. I know there are other ways to do this with extra grids and bolts and washers, but I like the idea of this extender because it folds up, allows some access to the food underneath, and comes pre-assembled.

3 split firebricks on edge on the fire ring ($10 for box of 6 at Menards) will lift the grid to the perfect height for raised direct cooking. Or you can have my old extender (If you come get it)
