NO MORE EGG-ENVY!!!

Hello BGErs,

Five years ago my wife bought me a Weber gas grill for my birthday. I loved my Weber for the first week, until we visited an outdoor furniture store and I saw my first BGE. I had a bad case of egg-envy after discussing the BGE with the salesperson. For five years I have been trying to convince my wife that I needed a BGE with no luck. Until, by the grace of god, the cooking grate on my Weber started to rust. I knew I could've just ordered a replacement, but my wife didn't. I saw my opening and I took it and since yesterday I am a very proud Large BGE owner. I also purchased the following egg-cessories:

- 40" Cypress Table
- Grill and Table Cover
- Electric Fire Starter
- BGE Lump Charcoal
- Ash Tool and Grill Gripper
- Grill Extender
- Fish and Veggie Grid
- V-Rack
- Vertical Turkey Roaster
- EggSettera - "Plate Setter"

I already had the standard grilling accessories and the egg-cessories I purchased were specifically for the BGE. Do any of you BGE experts out there recommend any additional egg-cessories? If so, I would love to hear about them.

Tonight I cooked my first meal on the BGE. I wanted to start simple with a couple of New York Strips. It was my first time firing the bad boy up and I had it stable at 650 degrees within 12 min. of throwing in the electric fire starter. I was blown away by the BGE at that point, since it took my Weber the same amount of time to max out at just over 500 degrees. I cooked the steaks exactly the way it was described in the video that came with the BGE. I seared the steaks on one side for a minute and the other side for a minute. Then I closed the draft door and top and let them set for about three minutes while the BGE cooled down. I did not smoke them since the video recommended not doing so in order to taste the natural difference compared to gas grills. I couldn't have wished for a better first experience. The steaks were a perfect medium rare and the taste was beyond compare. My wife and I agreed they were the best steaks we had ever tasted and that's a huge compliment considering we have some great steak houses in Omaha.

Tomorrow night I plan on cooking kabobs using the recipe out of the BGE cookbook. I hope it goes as well as it did tonight. The way I see it, I just turned 28 and I have plenty of time (barring something tragic) to enjoy my BGE and work on becoming an egg-spert. Tonights experience was well worth the wait.

  • Hi Chris,

I too am a new egghead, with just about one whopping week experience on my Large BGE (purchased Monday)! I've been cooking on a webber gas also the last couple of years, but have always preferred my Webber 22" charcoal kettle due to the great charcoal taste. I share your excitement and am enjoying the learning curve that I've been under this week.

I've been dissappointed on the nights that we've had leftovers for the next night and didn't get to cook. Tonight our nephew graduates from Pharmacy School down in Little Rock so we are doing the 'family thing' and have reservations at a nice restaurant there. Sighhhhh, another night missed out on cooking on the Egg!

I've learned alot from these eggers on this forum as I've read through alot of the archived messages looking for helpful info. There is plenty of that and it seems like a great group of people.

    Enjoy,

    Rick :P
