Hey Ron wondering if you have seen a Rutland get rock hard before. I have tried cleaning it encase I spilled something on it but it doesn't seem to change.image

After years of use then the fibers which are already embedded in adhesive will fill with lump dust, dripping etc so sure it can get hard. OTOH it appears your attempt to clean it has broken the outer fibers. If that bothers you you can take a butane lighter or a propane torch and burn off that fuzz. I just went out and looked at my 9 year old Rutland and it looks quite good - what and how did you try to clean yours with?

Couple of things, soap and water with a little nylon brush, then tried heating it with a touch and used a metal BBQ scrubber.

It may be, but is it leaking and you want more "spring" to the gasket or a "prettier" gasket? I'm still baffled about this cleaning thing...

Yes it's leaking that is why I am looking for more coverage, otherwise wouldn't care.

Normally only leaks when maverick wires are sticking out

OK...guess the Rutland gasket can't please everyone...but how many wisps of smoke do you see sneaking out around those tiny cables? I read posts by folks talking about their beliefs of using NO gaskets - so I wonder if they will chime in about their maverick wires...just sayin...

I love the Rutland, it's a steady stream but doesn't seen to effect the temp. My brother is a no gasket guy. Egg is 9 years old and no gasket since original
