Under bite is back already

So, in another thread I reported getting a new lower base and all the insides under warranty. On my dime, I purchased a new hinge assembly. Got everything together and I was aligned perfectly. Well, after about 3 or 4 cooks, tonight my temp jumped to 900 and after cooling it down to 700 I lifted the lid to make sure everything was ok and when I closed it back...there was the under bite. Any hope for me to loosen everything tomorrow after it cools and realign or did I just spend $125 for no good reason? Disappointed to say the least.

Let it completely cool. Realign and adjust. Perform dollar test. Tighten bolts on bands. You should NEVER attempt adjusting or tightening/loosening with hot egg. You'll be Aok.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

I've adjusted mine 3 times 3 different ways. I've accepted the fact that my egg needs jaw reconstruction surgery.Dunedin, FL

I'm with you. I performed my reconstruction with a new base and hinge...just expected it to last a bit longer than 2 weeks.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

Loosened the bands this morning and adjusted the top. Realigned again so all is right with the world again. Also, I apologized to my Egg for calling her a POS last night. I have smoke leaking from my egg all the time , i have tried to adjust it but it never sticks .
can anyone help me out with this ?

@pantsypants-the dollar bill test only works south of the border
>- Since the US still has dollars use one as a "feeler gauge" to check the dome to base seal. Basically close the dome on a dollar bill and then pull it out. Should feel resistance all around the circumference of the mating surface.
I guess you could use a sheet of paper or upscale to a 5 dollar bill test. If no resistance, or in your case, obvious smoke leaks then you have an air gap. If you can control your temps as you are then no impact on cooks, may extend your shutdown time and lump consumption. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint. -
i see no issue , The egg shuts down great and Temp control seems good ,
I just dont think its normal to see that much smoke leaking out .
oh well

Underbite came back again last night......temp got to 800 before I toned it down to 550. Am I the only one with an Egg that develops an underbite with each high temp cook?Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

Mine has had a slight underbite since my first high temp cook. It doesn't seem to affect anything, so I quit worrying about it.

Every single time I get over 500 degrees - when I open the egg - the the weight of the dome would cause the bands to slide down in the back causing a severe underbite. I would let the egg cool and re-tighten. I even got new bands thinking the bands were wonky. I could crank away until the bolts bent over and no matter what...underbite every time over 500. I cook pizza at least once a week - so that was getting ANNOYING.Finally, while the bands were still warm...I pushed up on the hinge assembly (with gloves on) and lined the bands back up and then tightened away. No more issues with underbite. In my situation, it was not only the underbite - but the hinge kept hitting the table and scratching it up.DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK...crack your egg base and it is on you.

If it's cooking don't worry, be happy mon :-hSalado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd.

If your bands slip during a high heat cook they are too loose.Adjust them again when the egg is cool, and then next time you do a high heat cook be sure tighten them before you open the egg (after reaching high cooking temp).
-
I'm not sure about tightening the bands super-tight while the egg is very hot. As the bands cool, they could contract and crack the ceramic.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

I would make them tight, but don't go standing on the wrench or anything like that. Just tight enough to stop the slipping. The bolt will break way before the egg will.
-
I experience this too, but trying to keep the thing perfect would drive me crazy - it's a grill. As long as it works, you're cool.
I will never cook inside again. -
It does work...just irritating is all. I got it realigned today and torqued the bolts to 10# as prescribed. I might give them a slight turn when warm to see if that helps. Finish this thread off in case it helps someone else. Once realigned, got it up to 500 or so and using the torque wrench, turned the bolts at 10lbs again. They all turned a bit. No more alignment issues even after a 700 - 800 degree burn.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html
