Stupid move of the day... or why I dont design planes for a living.
I was getting the day ready for some pork baby backs and some t-bones for dinner. I went out and got the Egg ready for a low and slow for the ribs. Well you know the Egg could use some cleaning, so could the plate setter and grate, so I fire up what was left of the lump and did a quick burnoff. Hmm taking too long and neeed to get the Egg set for the ribs. Still hot, hmm so I shovel the rest of the hot lump and ash, then vaccum out the remainder under the fire grate. WRONG. First was to go was the hose melting in several places, CRAP, well I stopped that idea real fast, scooped the remainder out with the trusty LawnRanger grate tool. Then the smell of platic, Crap again, my shopvac is on fire and slowly melting like the witch in wizard of oz, So I make a dash to the hose and ripped the top off the vaccum and put the fire out. I'm glad the wife wasnt around! So much for my $20 Hepa Filter and $80 vaccum. Now I have a 500 degree empty Egg. Well I filled the Egg back up got set for the ribs and away I go. some may ask " why did you use the shop vac" Well the thought was that the half filled drum of old ash would help cool off the hot ash and small bits of lump from the bottom of the Egg. New Egger's learn from this!

    Hi tach18k,
Good one. I've got one for you.
Years ago when I first started grilling I cleaned out my drum style one day in prep for a cook. I felt the ashes to make sure there was nothing hot & everything seemed OK, so I swept everything into a heavy duty plastic bucket & set it one the deck rails.
Next morning I'm in the kitchen making coffee & look out the window to see a plume of smoke rising from the deck.
The ashes had burned through the bucket, the deck rail & the decking & were smoldering all night long.
    Almost burned the house down.

heh i have done something similar to that
i have an old metal hubcap that i put ashes in, after one cook i put the ashes in the hubcap and set the hubcap on the deck, the bottom of the hubcap got hot enough to set the deck on fire we werent home at the time and my father who lives nextdoor happened to see the smoke and put it out[p]

    tach18k,
Thanks for a good chuckle. If we were all smart all of the time, then all of us would be rich and then there would be no opportunities to laugh at ourselves. We've all been there in one form or another. Thanks for being man enough to share it.[p]Spring "Been There Done That" Chicken

tach18k,[p]Funny you should post this today. I cooked on my egg yesterday. I decided this morning to completely clean her out before doing a slow rib cook today, so I pulled out the firebox and got out the shop vac. I thought about the possibility of frying the vac and raked my hands around in the ash before proceeding. Nevertheless, I think I'll go check out the vac and make sure nothing is smoldering inside before I hit the rack tonight. Thanks for your post. [p]Mike

    tach18k,
Lordy...!!! Sounds like something I would do.....I don't even want to go there. Glad 911 wasn't necessary.[p]Mike

  • tach18k,[p]Thank goodness you were not hurt! Years ago, my father emptied his smoker into the trash a day after it was used. We came home from dinner and sure enough, the trash was on fire.[p]I managed to put it out before it damaged much beyond the plastic trash can. It's a lesson we all learn directly or indirectly![p]BP
