Chicken into cooler on top of other stuff on top of ice. Five hours later I took it out and just out of curiosity checked it with thermapen and it was 44 internal. I put it in the fridge and plan on cooking tomorrow. Is it OK?

Smell has nothing to do with it. Yeah, if it smells bad, you KNOW it's bad. But salmonella tainted chicken doesn't necessarily smell bad. That said, as you described it, I'd probably eat it. But what do I know? I'm just a backyard cook too.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
