Empty Basket...Looking for egg.
With Father's Day approaching, I'm considering buying my husband an 'egg.' Our pit is basically gone so I know this would be appreciated. I visited a local hardware store and was put off by their attitude, thus the reason I'm not saying my name on here. <sorry> I saw prices somewhere online and now can't find them. They were pretty different from what I saw earlier. I need to get the best deal I can since this is coming from my stashed 'mad money.' Why is everyone so down on the medium sized egg? Thanks in advance.

MS,[p]Check out Naked Whiz's site. He has a list of online retailers in the links section.

MS,[p] Where do you live? Depending on that, people can advise
you as far as getting the best deal possible. Also, I don't
think anyone is "down" on the medium. There are a lot of
people who feel that if you're only going to have one egg,
and it's between the medium and the large, that the large
makes more sense. That's not a criticism of the medium.[p]Chuck

My compliments for your taste in Father's Day presents. He'll love it (and so will you).[p]As the owner of a medium, I'll try to explain why people may be "down" on mediums. Most folks choose a medium because of one or more of the following reasons, a. cost - can't afford a large, b. size - "gee, there are only two or three of us and we really don't need anything larger, and c. space - the large just seems *too* large.[p]Unfortunately once you get a medium and learn how to cook on it, you find yourself limited by its size. All your neighbors or relatives show up wanting to eat at once. You can do it on a medium, but it takes a lot more planning. You want to cook 2 or more slabs of ribs whole - can't do it on a medium, etc.[p]I'd suggest that if you can afford it and space isn't a problem, write the check for the large and don't think twice. You won't use that much more charcoal than with the medium, and on those occasions when you need "more power", it will accomodate all your needs.[p]Bob V
(who loves his medium, but....)

MS,[p]With regard to the medium, it is all about how many people you want to cook for. My neighor has a medium which is fine for 6-8 people. I have a large and yesterday cooked enough ribs for 15 - 20 people (8 slabs). I can cook 4 pork butts at once. With a medium you could never cook that much. I expect you will find the more your husband cooks the more people he will want to feed. When I bought the large the incremental cost over the medium was not that much.

MS,
Get a large. When my wife bought my egg for me, I thought I would never need a large. Now I wish I had an XL Egg!!!![p]mule

MS,
Here's a link to my links page which has a list of online sellers. Try Hearthside first (you need to call to get a price as I recall) since I think they have been recommended by others here. As for large vs. medium, I have one of both, but if I only had one, I'd get the large so I'd have maximum capacity. That's all. Otherwise, they are both great choices.[p]TNW

MS,[p]My wife gave me a large as a gift - one of the best gifts ever. So, good choice![p]There is a spot on the BGE page listing all the dealers in your area. (You type in your zip.) I would try the other dealers in your area before ordering by mail.[p]Be careful when comparing prices to ask what accessories come with the egg. The prices vary a bunch. Keep lookng - you will find a good deal. [p]Best,[p]CTB

MS, what a GREAT GIFT ! The Mothership, Big Green EGG in Egglanta, told me that 95% of all Eggs sold, are large Eggs. They are all fantastic cookers, just more space on the large when your friends and family realize what kind of food is coming off your new cooker....

MS,
What state do you live in? The MS in your screen name could represent either Mississippi or Missouri. If it's Mississippi, I can help you. Send me an E-Mail; however as others have stated, the list of dealers are available on this site.

I think you are all a bunch of good eggs. Thanks for the great advice. It is no surprise to me that men want Large Eggs. <s> I'm sure my husband will want that too. This really sounds funny. I shall check out the other couple of places here locally, then online. Thank you all again.
