Fuel taste in food?

Last night I cooked up numerous edibles for our ten guests. We made an Elk roast, yams, zucchini, asparagus and fiddleheads. Everthing tasted great - except the fiddleheads had a strange fuel flavour???[p]Everything was cooked using the same lump charcoal (Maple) during the same timespan. Cooking tempurature was between 220 (elk) and 350 (veggies).[p]I had this happen once before, where I was using the Eggcetera and pizza baking stone. The pizza crust reaked of gasoline?[p]My original impression, this first time around, was that perhaps the felt was melting and leaving a chemical flavour in the egg. Any ideas what is going on here?

ToddB,
How do you clean your pizza stone?
Any chemicals or just heat

ToddB,
I wonder......could it be from unburned volatile gas givin off from damp lump? (or lump dust) You could clean out the egg completly of old lump and ash, add fresh dry lump chunks without any dust and see how that works. A good established fire should have no smoke and a nice odor coming from the top vent before the food goes in.

Bill,[p]I've never cleaned my pizza stone.[p]Yet, this past grilling I obviously didn't use the pizza stone to cook the fiddleheads?
