Building an XL table

Hello!
I'll post some follow up pics of my progress and completion (gotta have it done before the Seahawks play this weekend!!!) but I have a quick question:
I'm building a table for my XL egg and I need to know how important it is to have the airflow space between the bottom of the egg and the stone underneath it. I've seen tables with and without the airflow space. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Kris

You need air or pavers. Can't set the egg directly on wood

bringing out the classics! 5 years later i finally got around to making this table
i tried to price out a stainless steel top surface but it was going to be way too expensive (over 1k!) so i'm left without a backup plan for the top surface.
it's western red cedar (i think) and i could either do a top surface that is about the same as the shelving but...i'm open to suggestions if anyone has one.
