Which Egg, Small or Mini?

With Father's Day coming up, I think the ideal gift would be a BGE for my Dad,(especially snce I'm now hooked). He loves to bar-b-que, and cooks mostly for himself,(Mom passed.) He currently uses a mini-weber. My question is, which egg do I go with, the small or mini? Are you limited to how and what you can cook with the mini? Thanks for the advise.

MOJoe, the Mini is great for one or two people, sometimes three if needed. It also is basically a direct typle cooker and is a searing machine for steaks and chops. Two good sized Strips will fit and will four medium sized pork chops, breasts. You 'can' do a low and slow type cook on the Mini, but it is tough to do. If your Dad likes to slow smoke pork butts or pieces of briskets, then the Small is the way to go. Both are manageable weight with the Mini coming in at 30 lbs and the Small at 65.[p]Here is tonights dinner cooked on the Mini, Jerk Pork Chops.[p]minijerkp1.jpg[p]minijerkp2.jpg[p]What ever your decision, it will be the right one. MOJoe,[p]Small out of the two; however, if you can afford it; I would take the Medium.

    Rumrunner,
Thanks for confirming. He likes ribs and brisket, so I was afraid the mini wouldn't be the best choice. I'll go with the small. You dinner looks awesome, thanks for sharing!

MOJoe,[p]What's your budget? If I could afford it, I would get him the Large. But if you want to go with the Small or Mini, then I would go with the Small just b/c you can do more with it (although I have a Mini and absolutely love it too). [p]Plus, with the Small you can buy a set of "Grate Mates" from Chubby and really make your dad's Small versatile.[p]TRex

    TRex,
Thanks for the advise TRex, my budget doesn't extend to the cost of a large, so I'll have to go with the small. What are Grate Mates? Thanks again.

MOJoe, Maybe I'm reading between the lines here, but I'd suggest the small. It is a very versatile cooker despite its size. As for adding even more versatility for a bargain price give him a couple of fire bricks which can be placed on edge so that an auxillary grate can give him the raised level ability. BTW I think that is very thoughtful of you to be giving your Father a gift of that caliber at his age.

I don't have any pictures but Chubby just came up with some great homemade accessories for the Small which allow you to do indirect setups for stuff like pizzas or even do whole chickens standing up. They're great little add-ons to give the Small some added versatility.[p]TRex

Chubby is currently out here in Northern California vacationing with the wife, no interent. I think he is coming by my house tomorrow and I will have him address this iisue of his "Grate Mates". His first production is due to ship next week, he has several orders already...so they must be popular.[p]For anyone interested in Chubby's Small Egg Set-up, you can email him using the email address on his profile. He should be returning home to Houston Tuesday pm.[p]Here's a couple of pics showing the Grate Mates in use-

    TRex,
I think Chubby is on a trip or something. I emailed him about the Grate Mates (how the heck did I miss taking a photo of them at Waldorf?) and so far haven't heard from him.[p]TNW
