Fire bricks and indirect cooking - Help
I've seen several examples of folks cooking indirectly by placing a drip pan and two fire bricks on the main grid, then putting a second grid on top of the fire bricks. Where can I get fire bricks (in Austin)? Neither Lowe's nor Home Depot carry them.[p]I am planning do smoke a brisket Monday and wanted to do it indirect. I was going to get a grid extender but both BBQs Galore and BBQ Outfitters don't have any in. I can't find anyone else who even carries them, so I am trying to improvise, but I can't find the bricks either. I suppose I could go with a plate setter. Any advantage to that?[p]

Rumrunner,
Thanks for the tip, and the quick followup!

Rumrunner,[p]Well darn, none of the local Ace Hardware's have them, and ordering them over the web won't help for Monday. So, I may be getting a plate setter after all.

JeffH,
use a couple of old coffee cans. cut 'em down to the height you want...they don't block the heat either... ray

Hi JeffH,
Look in the phone book under masonry supply or building materials. These stores usually carry them.
The coffee can idea is an excellent one. Bricks absorb more heat making it take a little longer to heat egg.
Good Luck.

JeffH,
You can get those brick from any refractory supplier. Look in the phone book. They should run you about $2.00 each.[p]

JeffH,[p]I got mine at A T Masonry Supply in Round Rock, Texas.
