homemade cold smoker help!!!

I made a cold-smoke chamber out of an old army foot locker with an electric hot plate to heat up wood chips.  I did a test run after assembling it this evening and the chips burst into flames. I must say that I had the heat on the hot plate cranked to high and I used a foil pack with a small amount of chips to test.  I will use a 5 quart cast iron dutch oven to use when I smoke my bacon.  Just wanted some advice from anyone who's used a similar setup.  I saw a Youtube video of someone using cardboard boxes to do what I'm trying to do so I know it can easily be done.  Any comments would be appreciated.
