Frozen turkey

I have a very small family. I usually buy a fresh turkey then carve and freeze the portions for use during the year. What is this forum's opinion of buying a whole frozen turkey (save $$) and cutting it in half. My question is...how well will these halves cook in a BGE. What is the sacrifice?

  • No sacrifice. You are essentially doing a half spatchcock. I bet @Mickey has a pic and recipe

Have done a few.  When they get around $.59-$.69/lb Get a few and have the butcher ripe them into half spatchcock as LS mentioned.  Have cooked the frozen or defrosted and just as good as any other bird. Plus they don't take up as much space as the whole bird in the freezer. Can't find the pic on photobucket since they "tweeked" the system awhile back.

I am thinking that one quarter of the bird would be better for my small family. Will that still work in the BGE?  Thanks.

Sure! white meat breast & wing or dark leg & thigh. I like to work with 12-15 pounders. If frozen ask the butcher to cut on saw, some shops do not like to cut poultry on the stores saw.
