SmokeWare maintenance
RRP
Posts: 26,455

In the past I routinely would have the need to clean Miss Daisey every 6 months or so, so I thought today I would clean my 6 month old SmokeWear cap formally known as Eggware. I didn't take a before picture and I should have, but it was getting getting rather black and brown. Most of the junk came off in the sink using elbow grease and a 3M Scotch Brite scrubber pad. OTOH some really baked on crud even resisted a Brillo Pad, but this spot are not visible on the outside. One word of caution though is to wear disposable gloves as the creosote under the cap portion is pretty nasty stuff and try as I did I still kept getting into it! Next time I plan to soak it overnight in ammonia.
Just the same it's nice and clean looking now!

@RRP, looks like new!
I've heard of folks putting a cup of lye in a trash bag, and putting the grill grates, etc inside. Tie it shut, let it sit in the sun for an afternoon, and the gunk is 'digested' - simply rinses off. Recommended for stainless steel only.
Wondering if you or anyone has heard of this or tried?+++++++++++++++++++++++++++Austin, Texas. I'm the guy holding a beer. -

It might, but the Scotch Brite was pretty quick and actually cleaned off the majority of the exterior black and brown. I was just trying to see if I could go back to like new condition when it dawned on me..."why?" LOLRe-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
They are also dishwasher safe as well. I would guess that is the easiest way to clean it.

Looks new and shiny! @RRP can you shut down the egg with this cap, or do you still use the ceramic cap for that?- Proud owner of a Large BGE- Norman, OK

Personally, I use the Eggware cap to shut down my egg every time.
Works great.

Excellent. It seems like it would be great to keep rain out. I've done a few cooks in the pouring rain. No fires have gone out, but I always watch them really closely!- Proud owner of a Large BGE- Norman, OK

I suppose if you have a real pot-srcubber cycle and washed it often enough that might keep it cleaned up, but mine was pretty crusted and had baked on creosote.Eggcelsior said:They are also dishwasher safe as well.
