What do people use to brine their birds? I went by bed bath and beyond and they didn't have anything.

You can use any food grade bucket. Go to McDonald's and ask about getting a pickle bucket. Clean it out and now you have what it take to do anything.

Assuming you mean big birds like turkeys and not just yard birds I use this big Igloo. I place the bird is a large plastic bag, fill it with my brine solution, tie it off and then into the Igloo. Then I pour in cold water and top off with ice, thus suspending the bird in the bag in this envelop of cold water.. I then place a probe inside to keep track of the water temperature from outside the tightly sealed Igloo. Some of my favorite brine recipes go 2 to 3 days.

Hmm. Both very logical ideas. I was particularly wanting one of the big opaque colored ones with the gallon markings on the side.

Restaurant Depot has what you are looking for. If you have a Costco commercial they have them too.rholt said:Hmm. Both very logical ideas. I was particularly wanting one of the big opaque colored ones with the qgallon markings on the side.

I just use a 3 gallon or 5 gallon plastic bucket. The buckets are used for brining only.I have also used 12 quart polycarbonate tubs that I use for mixing dough, but those are much more expensive.

Thanks...BTW I have brined a 24 pound bird this way. The cooler just works better for me since I never have enough space in my refrig to place a 5 gallon bucket. -
For smaller birds/roasters I use one of these almost weekly. Fits 1gal of brine and 1 spatchcocked bird almost perfectly.Madison, CTLBGE June 2013.

I use a huge glass bowl, and two Spatchcock chickens will fit in it. Easy to clean and fits on one of the icebox shelves perfectly.Geaux Tigers!! West Monroe, Louisiana

Ooops, I posted the 5qt picture. I use the 10qt version.Madison, CTLBGE June 2013.

I just picked one up @ home depot for $6... Specially made for food. You can't go wrong with that price - more $$ for meat for the Egg -
I caution all to use only food grade 5gl buckets. Nonfood grade will give off some rather unhealthy toxins.
-
Agreed with approved food containers.
This what I bought.

You get that type of thing at most homebrew stores just make sure they have a gasket under the lidHFX NS

i use the big blue stock pots or tamale pots they sell at walmart. In my smaller one I can do like 2-3 chickens or about a 12-15 pound turkey. plus I can use it for stocks and chilli. The large one is good for a couple of butts, large birds etc.
