Developing my own rub, why not start with Aaron Franklins Rib Rub.

Out of frustration that I can't get my favorite pork rub delivered to my house (only available locally in Florida)I've decided to try and develop my own. Instead of inventing one I thought I'd try out Aaron Franklins rib rub recipe and see how I can tweak it to suit my own tastes. Here is his recipe:
2 parts pepper (i ground my own pepper from whole black peppercorns) to one part kosher salt.
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Pinch of chili powder
Paprika
I coated my spareribs evenly with the rub and then put them on the XL. Cooked the spares at 225 for 4 hours, 250 for an hour, then wrapped them after coating them with BBQ sauce for one more hour. They came out good, but I think Aaron's rub needs more salt so I'm going to work with the ratio a bit and add in some more spices. I'll keep you guys posted until I get it right. Here are some pics of the cook. Including some homemade corn hash and sour cream lime coleslaw.

There is a rib joint near Naples, Fl called MichealBob's. the funny thing about them is their ribs are good, but not great. There rub is amazing though . I happen to pick up their rib rub 3 years ago and it comes out awesome when you cook ribs on the egg. I usually get my mother in law to sed me 6 shakers of rub every 3 or 4 months, but they haven't been down to FL in a while.fljoemon said:Just curious .. what is your favorite rub only available in FL?
I ran out about a month ago. I fin that other rubs, like Dizzy Dust are too spicy. I like a nice salty rub with a couple of hints of other spices. I'm a big fan of tasting the meat more than the rub.
