as @hibby said- I think ideally you have to install this perpendicular to the grate for rigidity.
I was going to use this set up yesterday but the grate I have was way too flimsy to hold 20lbs of pork... even if it was installed perpendicular I am not sure it would of held up well. I ended up using the spider to get it up a little bit higher
what type of grid is everyone using for a heavier type cook?

@roblew, yes. I can still get you one.

I'm still using mine. I've got an older LBGE, so with the plate setter in, my cooking grid sits high. The Webber charcoal grate just barely fits. Both it and my original grid have rust issues if not kept greasy...so I'm thinking about swapping both for stainless LBGE and MBGE grids.

That's my next question. What is the best grate size to use? I want it for normal raised direct, but I also want to use it for indirect raised two tier cooking, if possible.
-
A Webber charcoal grate measuring (IIRC) 17" will just barely fit if you place the extender just right and don't use the upper grid raising bushing. Some of that upper grid space ends up unusable though, as anything put near the center of the forward edge can interfere with the dome thermometer. I think others have used the medium BGE cooking grid, which at 15" diameter is a much easier fit.
BTW, I found that putting a brick (actually cut piece of paver) on the back edge of the bottom grid makes it safer to fully swing the upper grid out without risk of the whole setup tipping out of the egg. I guess if I replaced my bottom grid with one of the less expensive cast iron ones (which would be cheaper than BGE's stainless) it might not need the brick.

I have one of these extenders and it works great. Very easy to remove or add on during a cook.

Will this work for a medium egg and if so can I get a grate small enough to fit it? How much are they?Jefferson .GA.Been egging since 1985 on a medium egg

@eggcelsior I'm intrigued. Any chance of procuring one for an XL?
