Howdy John
I am doing a spatch bird now direct....but I can flip it to get it even. For your beer-in-the-rear I vote for indirect since it sits in the same position. Don't wanna overcook the butt.[p]Happy cookin. and a cold one to you.

JM3,
Definitely indirect.

Nature Boy,
Thanks for the quick response. 6 minutes from post to answer. Doesn't get much better. Thanks for the previous advice on the rib tips they were a hit today. [p]John

JM3,
I've always done my vertical birds DIRECT on a raised grid at about 375 dome temp.

I do mine on the regular grid direct at 350°. I haven't had any issue with uneven cooking from top to bottom. I do rotate the grill halfway through the cook.[p]Jim
