Recycle Rant

  • Our rural county has a landfill with a finite lifespan and should consider a lot of options, but while we once had transfer stations where household waste could be hauled by the homeowner, our esteemed commission chairman decreed all litter came from pickup trucks going to the dumpsters. We now have a $128/per year tax increase to pay for weekly  home pickup.
Recycling was available, but at additional cost. Guess what - no more recycling because no body will pay additional fees so Waste Management can profit.
Waste Management probably pays the county to dump the garbage. We can haul white goods (refrigerators, stove, etc) to the land fill where it is dumped in a pile for possible recycling.
Did the litter go away? No the beer bottles and fast food boxes are still blowing out the back of pickup trucks or something, because there is still litter on the road shoulders.
Next election she is up in a county wide election, so time will tell if there are enough people who think this is stupid to get her out of office.
When the county had dumpsters, there were used oil recycling containers at the site, but they were removed. Now used motor oil is probably put into the empty oil containers and thrown into the garbage.
Now off the soap box and back to the egg.

There is a very easy way to correct trash coming from pick up trucks --- it's called "Law Enforcement" and the fine is pretty stiff in most cases.  We had the same problem from garabge trucks entering the landfill. The first week they gave out "Warnings" --  within a month the problem was solved.
