Cleaning and care of table?

My table lives under a covered awning, but still gets very dirty and some exspsure to the elements....what's the best way to keep it in good shape? Today I washed it down with a litte soap and water, but not sure that was exactly best practice for wood care...

    Options
    Keep water off it for a week or more to let it dry well.  Sand any stains out, sand everything you want protected with 120 grit or so.  Apply spar paint - at least 3 coats.  Sand between coats.  Dirt and grease will wipe off and water will bead up.
