Building a pizza peel

I am going to build one and am thinking about using walnut wood. Do any of you weekend wood workers have any thoughts on walnut or any type of food safe finish/oil, etc?
Born and raised in NOLA. Now live in East TN.

Um. I have 2 hanging behind my garbage can you can have. Wooden pizza peels are horrible in my opinion. Buy a pizza screen or use parchment paper.

I use a wooden peel, and with a little flour rubbed on, no problem at all.Packerland, Wisconsin

Any hardwood should be fine, like walnut or maple. I wouldn't even put a finish on it, but if you do, some type of food-safe finish like mineral oil or a salad-bowl type of finish.

Here is my home made one. From Left over IPE wood from building my table. Bent the corners of the metal so it would'nt be floppy. Works perfectlyQuebec - Canada
