Way to hide sub-forums you do not wish to see (i.e, Off-Topic, etc)

OK, because some folks hate to see anything non-BGE related on the BGE Off-Topic sub-forum of the main BGE forum website, I did some quick research & found a way to avoid seeing any sub-forums you do not wish to see:
  1. Click on "Forums" in the upper left corner
  2. Scroll down until you see "Off Topic" (or any other forum you want to remove)
  3. Slowly move your mouse toward the right side of the "Off Topic" forum and let it "hover" there:  An icon looking like a "gear" should appear
  4. Click on that Gear Icon:  2 options (Mark Read & Hide) should appear
  5. Click "Hide"

This will effectively make every post in that sub-forum invisible to you - hence, you will, in effect have controlled the content of the forum because there will no longer be any "Off Topic" (or any other sub-forum) posts that you will ever see (you can get it back to following the steps above again, and clicking "Unhide").

There may also be a way to hide a specific person's posts as well, but I haven't spent the time to figure that out or not - if not, I'm positive that the capability exists, and that a request to the forum admin to add such a capability might be a worthwhile pursuit - in fact, in doing a quick search on the Vanillaforums.org user community, there is an "add on" called "IgnoreUser" (version 1.3, as of this writing).

http://vanillaforums.org/addon/ignoreuser-plugin

Perhaps the BGE forum admins can download & add this capability (and perhaps other add ons) to our beloved BGE forum???

HTH,
Rob

So the boilerplate response for whiners posting on the OT forum is "Shaddup and hide it if ya don't like it!"?

hmmmm, no... but ummmm, I posted what I thought was an elegant solution to NOT having to see threads you don't want to see.

It was a way to provide folks w/ some control.  Apparently, there are some folks who just cannot control their hands & mysteriously allow their mice to move over to a thread clearly marked "OT" and subsequently click on it, even though they profess to NOT like OT threads.

Personal accountability & responsibility must not have been included in their "how to be an adult" instruction manual.

The other option is to somehow wield magical powers that make everyone conform to someone else's rules for posting on a forum.  And we all know how well that works.

If you're upset about my solution - what would be YOUR response then???

I'm curious - how many folks have guns held to their head w/ a slave master forcing them to click on a forum that they don't want to??? - inquiring minds want to know...

Personally, if it looks interesting, I want to read it.  If you're monitoring the "Recent Discussions", it's gonna pop up unless you do hide it.  Yeah, no one is holding a gun to my head to actually browse that forum.

Just like when mom and pop told you not to do something, you want to do it even more, I think more peeps will be trolling the OT discussion in the future, considering all the recent drama and controversy.

OK, I don't understand the issue - nobody is forcing anyone to "hide" any forum, or to not hide it, or to click on a forum, or to not click on it.

In the "spiders" forum, a soap-opera style drama occurred because someone felt that posting pics of spiders in the OT forum was *too* Off-Topic.  And apparently, they couldn't control themselves to NOT click on the clearly labeled "mother spider with hundreds of babies" title with an "Off Topic" designation to it.

I provided a solution to that conundrum.  Anyone can choose to enact said solution, or to NOT enact said solution.  My guess is that not everyone knows there is a way to hide sub-forums (I personally was unaware of this feature until I specifically started looking around for it).  All I did was post my findings as sort of a "public service" announcement to say "hey, there's a way to deal w/ what is upsetting you."

It just seems that your response to my posting of said solution was condescending & patronizing, so again, I ask, what would be YOUR solution proposal?  At least I'm trying to help folks realize there are ways to control what they see (or not see) in these forums, so that they can get on w/ their life & not let a BBQ forum get the best of them (unless, of course, wallowing in internet drama IS their life, which could explain their inability to NOT click on something they profess to NOT want to read).... I dunno, I'm not a psychiatrist...

only being on this board a few months, it appears the tide is changing and not everyone likes it.  i do not know the history prior to me joining nor really care to.  dont care who thinks they have seniority or what board is better.

i have been on another mesage board for 7 years or so.  they have a "lounge" area where if you come in there and try to start a topic that has anything to do with what the forumn was actually created for- you will be ridiculed and marked for life.  it is called the lounge for a reason.  most members of that site cannot handle the lounge and all of teh riducle and sarcasm that takes place.  most get butt hurt and delete their thread or come back under a new name - or start to read only.

it is all off topic  all the time in there.

that is what i view the OT forumn here is meant to be. the problem is the "old school" folks have a hard time with adjusting to new posters, thoughts, etc because it isnt theirs any longer and this isnt the way it's supposed to be.

the constant thing about message boards is change.  if you cant adapt to that, youre SOL.

what seems to be worse here is this is mostly older guys that are getting their panties in a bunch.  at least the other board is made up of late 20 to mid 30's type guys.  you expect that.

hurt feelings over nasty comments?  gtfo with that and grow a set.

It wasn't meant in the slightest to be patronizing or or condescending.  Sorry if you took it that way. I read my response several times and I don't see it - just friendly banter about human nature is what I thought we were doing.  I applaud you for finding that feature.  I've just found an application for it.

I didn't see anything condescending or patronizing either...to me, you stated that when someone bitches about OT topics that are posted correctly in the OT forum, they should be reminded that the option to hide that sub forum exists. Surprising more was taken from nola's statement than that...
  • Nola - no need to apologize, I wasn't complaining or expressing "hurt" - I don't want, nor need an apology for words written on a BBQ forum.

I was stating my opinion as to what I thought you wrote because you used phrases like "boilerplate response" and "shaddup & hide it" to describe my solution.  Those phrases are generally regarded as antagonistic.

That, coupled w/ the fact that there were no cute lil smiley faces associated w/ your response - which is typically what someone would use if they were engaging in "friendly banter" to graphically illustrate what the written word cannot convey that would normally be conveyed via someone's tone of voice, inflection, facial expression, etc.  - led me to make an (apparently incorrect) assumption.

No harm, no foul :P <--- friendly banter icon :D

Thanks.  I was in fact advocating using the neat feature...the "shaddup" was just a poor attempt at humor.

It's all good.  I didn't see this until now.  I like your contributions - find them thoughtful and intelligent.   No harm no foul
