60mph microbursts don't like BGEs

We had a 60 mph microburst swirl through our neighborhood last Friday that almost killed my large BGE.  It was partially my fault, because I took the brakes off the wheels to move it in the morning and never put them back on.  With no brakes and having the cover on (which acted like a big sail), it got swept in the wind, rolled about 8ft over uneven flagstone and fell off our patio (about a foot high from ground level). 

 

We were out of town and the person that was watching our house said that she couldn't tell if it was broken or not because it was too heavy for her to lift.  I was a wreck all weekend until we got back Sunday afternoon.  Unbelievably, only the fire ring and fire box were damaged (shattered)...the outer shell was still completely in tact...YES!!!  I went and bought a new fire box and ring and now I'm back in business. 

 

Sure won't forget to lock the brakes again...

sounds like the downbursts don't like covers.  no cover here.  and now that i have learned that more damage can come from trying to protect the egg from the weather, than from the weather itself, not sure i will ever get one.

I experienced similar high wind weather conditions back in the Spring of 2010, with results better than yours, the only damage to my egg was a broken side table (egg mate) and a torn up gasket. Mine landed in grass, not on a hard surface.

My four day old, made in China, $300. gazebo was a different matter, rendered totally unsalvageable. It may have fared better but I had not yet anchored the corner posts to the patio. As the time of destruction there were concrete blocks weighting down each corner, so likely anchoring would not have helped. I believe the gazebo let go first, blew into the egg and toppled it.

Been through other storms with same or higher wind speeds with no troubles and the cover on. Perhaps just lucky, I'm rethinking needing a cover now. At any rate, I believe the eggs are much tougher than one might imagine.
