Hi,[p]How often should one clean out the ashes before it impacts the airflow? Do most people clean the ashes before each cook? [p]Much Thanks,
Bob

  • Mahoney,
I usually clean out the ashes about every 5 uses. When I feel the need, I take out the fire box and do a detail clean. I think it will hold a fair amount of ash before it effects the flow of air. [p]Jerry

Mahoney,[p]Before starting the cooker, open the bottom vent all the way and look into the area below the charcoal grate. If the accumulated ash on the bottom looks like it will obstruct the airflow into the firebox, clean it out.
You may also want to check the airholes in the firebox and make sure they are free from charcoal bits... as long as the air can flow freely into the fire chamber you will be fine.....and a little ash in the bottom will not affect your cook.

  • The way you are cleaning your egg will certainly work but I think you are going to way to much trouble. Just stick the shop vac in the bottom and suck out all those ashes. It takes less than a minute and gets what I would estimate at 98% of the ashes in the bottom. When you are stiring your lump you can check the air holes for blockage.
