Any books on Grilling or BBQ that you would recommend?

Hey guys/gals,

I love reading about my hobbies, and although I've grilled for many years, I know I still have a lot of learning to do.  So I am going to purchase a book, or a few books about grilling.  Hopefully not just recipe books, but about techniques, in depth smoking info, etc.

So if you have a favorite, please give me some ideas.

Thanks,

Frank

Frank, I have a weakness for buying books about my hobbies too, and just counted up sixteen (!) books on barbecue and grilling in my collection.   :O
    My two favorites are:

Barbecue Secrets, by Ron Shewchuk (a retired 'que circuit champion who spills all his techniques), I use both his beef and his pork rubs exclusively in my own smoking; and

Smokin' with Myron Mixon, (a 'que circuit champion who's NOT retired, but spills all his techniques anyway).  I love his irreverent, Bourdain-esque writing style.

  • As someone who is in the bbq business the book that I recommend above all others is MASTERING THE GRILL by Andrew Schloss & David Joachim. While most books are recipe driven, and this one has its share, it is the most comprehensive about the technicalities of grilling and smoking. With regards to meat it has sections from fats and proteins to the differences in cooking grass-fed, grain-fed and organic. Grilling produce is broken down into roots, stems, fruits, vegetables, leaves and flowers. Great book.
  • The big green Egg cookbook has good recipes

Dr BBQ's Big Time Barbecue cookbook is good. Myron Mixon's is also a good one.

My go to book is Paul Kirk's Championship Barbeque.  I have lots of others, but keep coming back to it.

  • If you have a Kindle account, you can down load the "Big green egg cookbook" for $10.  These sell at the dealers for around $50

BBQ Bible is OK, but How to Grill is better for new people. BBQ USA and Planet BBQ are my favorites. I love his Sauces, Rubs and Marinates as well.

For general Cookery, I recommend On Food and Cooking by Harold McGee and How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman

On the Nekkid Whiz site you can download a BUNCH of cookbooks compiled from Egg fests over the years. There's more Egg knowledge in them than any of those $25 books by authors that don't know what an Egg is!
  • Yeah, You can find a Real Man's Chili from Ocala '08 that, while not a prizewinner finished a solid second :D

  • Another great BBQ book is Chris Lilly's book.  It was a great read even if you didn't check out the recipes.

I just got Smoke and Spice in the mail today.  I love the value in buying used books from Amazon.  I got the book in really good condition for $1.49 with $3.99 shipping.  My cookbooks always end up with stains, etc, so it's nice to get a huge discount.

Looking forward to reading it and the others.
