Wiping the probe on your pants leg or licking it clean doesn't go over well with the guests.
My other half's injectable meds come with an abundance of alcohol wipes each month. Instead of throwing the extras away, I use them to clean off and disinfect my probes.BJ (Powhatan, VA) -
I would NEVER wipe it on my pants leg! X(

I don't get dried stuff on my Thermapen probe but the probe for my Stoker I do. I work on it a little bit but no, I do not get it all off. Just ordered a thermapen. I have an electric but it takes several seconds to calibrate the temp. Don't want to wait plus the probe is too thick and fluids run out.
-
What is Thermapen and where would I purchase one??
-
You purchase directly from Thermoworks website. What caused me to make the initial post is the notation in the manual after mine arrived about cleaning. For example,if the first time you test your meat is way undercooked, do you really want to put that right back into the meat when it is later fully cooked? The manual says that they sell probe wipes, or that you can use regular household antibacterial wipes. Again, not sure I like the thought of sticking some Lysol antibacterial chemical residue directly into my food, but not sure of the effects of water on the probe, since they also frown on submerging it in water. I have elected to go with alcohol wipes, assuming the harmful iso will evaporate off completely as it dries....
Anyway, the thermometer works great!

I don't lick and wipe but I do just wipe with a wet paper towel
before and after a cook. I never worry about sticking and re-sticking
during a cook. The bad things that grow on meat grow on the outside not
the inside where the probe goes. Not much is going to grow on the
outside as long as your cooking above 140. I haven't gotten anyone sick
yet, as far as I know

You can't submerge the body of the unit, but you can certainly submerge the probe itself."since they also frown on submerging it in water."
How would you calibrate it otherwise!I've calibrated mine at least a dozen times (submerging the probe in boiling water) and run it under water every time I use it. I've had it for many, many years and it works as good as the day I bought it.Packerland, Wisconsin
