I Will be receiving my new Big Green Egg for my anniversary, Yes my wife is incredible. My question is, she soaks her wine corks in 70% isopropyl alcohol "Rubbing" to use as a fire starter. Can I use this as a coal starter, or will this cause an issue.
Thanx soon to be Newbie.

I'm surprised cork absorbs anything. What kind of grill did your wife start with them? (and yes, she sounds like a keeper!)___________

she used the cork to start my Weber charcoal grills the corks soak for months at a time and were used to start Kingsford charcoal. have not tried with natural coal yet

Why not just use a Mapp torch for about 1 minute. Works great.

A paper towel with a little EVOO on it then rolled up works great........plus will ensure no strange odors from starter.......

I'm with BBQMaven. Just pour it directly on the lump. I don't measure it like he/she does, though.__________________________________________Dripping Springs, Texas.Just west of Austintatious

Has any one tried the Frontier Eco-start? I was at Whole Foods this evening and saw it, didn't know if it was recommened for the Egg.

I don't know How much you intend to use your egg but if you use your egg as much as most of us you will have to drink 6-8 bottles of wine a week just to stay close to having enough fire starters...Ha.Visit my blog, dedicated to my Big Green Egg Recipies at http://www.bigtsbge.blogspot.com You can also follow my posts on FaceBook under the name Keep On Eggin' or the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Keep-On-Eggin/198049930216241

Propane tourch works fine for me...usually starts in 1-2 minutes!

i ran out of propane, i ran out of starter cubes, My olive oil is nearly gone, so I started using the alcohol method, It wourks great, quick easy and cheap, next time at the walmart or your other favorite discount house, pick up a cheap bottle of 91%, it a $ 1.50. i bet I will get 20 starts out of it.

Propane for me. On a trigger torch. No matches, no measuring. No mess, no fumes, no residue, no cleanup, no significant cost and no risk of a failed light.

Around the holidays we use food warmers, and indelibly we have several cans that were used for the warmers with various amounts of oil left in them. Poke a small hole in the top and shake a small amount of "oil" on the charcoal, works like a charm.

Our Firestarter Recipe
If you or your wife are fans of Yankee Candle tarts, save the used ones for the candle wax. We take empty PAPER egg cartons (no pun intended), add a little dryer lint in each little cup, and drizzle melted candle wax over it. They make great firestarters.

DO NOT USE EVOO to light your egg. I find that extremely disrespective to such a nice ingredient.
EVOO has a low smoke point so you may as well use something hotter (although this probably doesn't make much difference). Use the cheapest oil you have. That's what I do and it works great.
EVOO is waaay overused in BBQ.But what if that is all I have? That's why I had to go to MAPP..... -
