Tri-Tip methods

Cooked my first Tri-Tip the other night with Santa Maria rub. Publix in Miami now has them for about 7/lb. Very tasty. I cooked it medium heat for about 10-12 minutes per side.
Was wondering about searing next time for maybe a minute or so each side them allowing 7-8 minutes per side. Looking for methods? We diffinetly enjoyed this cut of beef.

  • bk,[p]You might want to try this recipe. I've been using it for 10 years and still get emails from happy grillers. :-)[p]Being a BGE newbie, I have not done it on the egg yet. It's the high temp searing step followed by medium heat indirect cooking that has me baffled. The BGE holds heat so well I can't imagine it cooling off fast enough from high searing heat to prevent the meat from burning. Any ideas?[p]BP

bk, My way which is to rub it first. then set it up for low and slow at 250 dome. Let it get to about 125-130, pull off and resr about 15 minutes, high fire the Egg and sear it to your liking. this should give you a great medium rare tri-tip

  • bk,[p]Oh man..I seen my first ever tri tip in the grocery store a few weeks back. I didn't buy it cuz it was somethin like ate dollas a pound..and black angus taboot..though since it wasnt cab not sure what that means. Just couldn't bring myself to spend that much on somethin I new so little bout since I've never even seen one or even tasted one. Now I'm thinkin I outta buy one next time I get the chance. [p]

    bk,
After hearing all the rave about tri-tip I found them at Trader Joes. Seasoned are seared at high temp, let rest and then completed cook at about 400. To me, tri-tip tastes like a thick flank steak. I'll cook it again, but I love flank steak and it's more reasonably priced.

fishlessman,[p]It was at Hannaford Brothers in Rindge NH. Do you have them out your way or is that a NH thing ? [p]First time I've ever seen one too, now I'm kicking myself for not buying it. I just thought the price was way too high.[p]StumpBaby

fishlessman,[p]I'll stop by Hannafords (not a big fan of their meat dept either..all the pork is enhanced..and I don't think I've seen any cut of beef more than 3 pounds ever) on the way home tonight..and check it out. I'll let you know. I'm willin to drive out your way if your willin to meet the stump and getit..if they have them..and the price is right..and you couldn't get them...[p]StumpBaby

    StumpBaby,
before you go that far out of your way, let me check the one near me. at 8 dollars a pound theres a butcher near me that might order me one if i asked, but i know it would be expensive. lately ive found that most chains around me are repackaging that enhanced stuff. and they dont mention it on the label. i have to wonder about those tritips, if they are that good, why are they so hard to get around here

    fishlessman,
I guess that is an advantage of living in CA, we can get tri tips any time anywhere, and sometimes on sale for under $3 a lb
