Finally tired of fighting all the hassles of gas grill and moving up the the BGE. My stainless gasser is huge, and it's now me and the missus most of the time, but we do entertain, so my question is what size egg? Specifically, to those of you who have the large, would you rather have the XL?[p]Thanks/Dave

  • Dave B,
If I could afford the XL I would add it to my collection.

    Dave B,
If I could afford an XL I would probably have one. However the large has been able to easily handle all of the big cooks that I have had.

Dave B,[p]the xl is temping. maybe its just guy thing, but i'd like one.[p]with that said, the large has been great and has handled our needs well. i can only think of one or two occasions when i would have needed a larger smoker.

    Dave B,
im usually cooking for 1 or 2 and the weekend crowd and i find the large to be big enough. ive been considering the xl for my camp, but have changed my mind recently and am putting a large there and adding a small back at the house. if you have the money for the xl then consider a combo of large and small. the combo gives you more options for a cookout

As an owner of a whole nest full of Eggs, I'll give you my 2¢ worth and add a guarantee that my opinion is worth every penny. For standard everyday family use, including cooking for a decent size crowd, I'd get the large, not the XL. The large will cook all you need to feed 15-20 people if you plan the menu and the time accordingly. While the XL will hold a ton more food, it takes more charcoal to fill than the large and it takes a while longer to heat up. It was built for volume, not efficiency. Our XL is mainly for competition, but I keep it in my garage because I usually have to cook a large quantity of meat once a week or so for my small catering operation. However, if I'm just cooking the evening meal or having a few friends over and I have to choose amongst the Small, Large or XL Eggs, 75% of the time, I choose the large. Don't get me wrong. You'll be happy as a lark if you choose the XL. I just think you might find it a bit (OK, more than a bit!) of overkill for a couple burgers or chicken breasts. You also might want to consider the fact that a pretty darn large percentage of folks on the forum here are multiple Egg owners. Chances are you'll be adding another to the family down the road and at that point, the XL might just be your ticket![p]Frosty Ones,
    Jim

JSlot,[p]That's exactly the type of information I was looking for. I gotta get past the "gotta have the biggest" typical male attitude![p] Thanks to all for your input.[p]Dave
  • Dave B, I, too, have a large and a small. The large has been plenty big enough for my family of 5 and more. I have cooked for 10-15 people easily. The small is great for small cooks, plus it is easily portable. We camp alot and take it with us. You will use much less lump, less heat up time, with the large. But if you just gotta have the biggest egg on the block, go for it! Just have a forklift to move it around with.
