drying fruit?

since i bought a bbq guru, i don't feel like dropping cash on a dehydrator.
has anybody tried this? suggestions? is it possible to dry fruit on an egg?

while some people here on the forum believe the egg can do anything, i don't think you can avoid getting some smoke flavor in your dried fruit, even if you use the "cleanest burning" lump you can find--cowboy lump comes to mind.
plus, you'll need to buy a fairly small mesh screen so the fruit doesn't drop thru into the fire.
finally, i think that recommended temps for dehydrating fruit is 130F or so. it will be hard to impossible to keep the egg at that temp without the fire going out.
just checked ebay--here's a dehydrator that's currently listed.
