<p />I'm thinking of getting a small BGE but I wanted a plate setter and pizza stone for it. As we all know, there are no "small" plate setters. But I started searching and ran across one that may fit. I just don't have a small to try it on. [p]As you can see, it is 13 1/2" across and the legs are not at 120° angles. The legs raise it about 2 1/2". I think it will fit a small.[p]The center hole was not in the picture and I learned that the company no longer carries the solid one (which also had the 120° legs). This one was $15.00.[p]For those of you who have small BGE's, will this work? If it does, it may solve the small plate setter problem. [p]Spring Chicken

    Spring Chicken,
sorry, but no it won't - the diameter with wiggle room is at best 13.5" in mine - but again that has to be direct through the middle. Don't believe me? cut a 13" circle out of a piece of paper.

    RRP,
I was counting on that "wiggle room" to allow for a snug fit. It still may fit because 13 1/2" is rounded up by maybe a 1/4". I may stop at a dealer who carries smalls and see it it will fit.[p]I'm also looking for comments on the center hole. Is that a plus or minus? It can be covered with a small ceramic plate if necessary. [p]Spring Chicken

    Spring Chicken,
guess I wasn't clear - looking at your picture again the distance of say 9:00 to 3:00 can't be more than 13.5" however that also means then from that line then the piece aimed at 12:00 can't be more than 6.75" and it sure looks like a lot more than that to me.

  • Spring Chicken, when i bought a small bge - i also bought the same platesetter - it will fit, but you have to file some of the edges down (sort of rounding it off). then place a pizza sone on top to cover the hole when doing indirect. (i did trade in the small a few weeks later for my medium)

    RRP,
It's 11" deep.[p]The only way I will know if it fits is to try it on a small.[p]Spring Chicken

    RRP,
Chef Arnoldi answered my question. Gotta file it down some in order to make it fit. [p]I'm thinking if there are that many "smalls" being sold, it may be worthwhile to make a mold just for a small. It shouldn't take much effort to make a plate setter once you have the mold. Maybe I can put a Spring Chicken logo in the center instead of a hole.[p]Its gotta be frustrating for small BGE owners not to have all the tools to do a complete cook.[p]Thanks[p]Spring Chicken

  • Spring Chicken,
where can one get that platesetter?

    daddyboat,
I got it from Continental Clay Company. The one in their picture is not the one they now sell. But the one I purchased was only $15.00 plus S&H. I figure if it doesn't work on a small I will use it on top of my large plate setter.[p]Spring Chicken

    Spring Chicken,
Please let us know if it fits. Although a solid surface would be nice, the hole shouldn't be much of a problem cause the grate in the small sits a few inches below the lip. So, if you put a stone on top the new cooking level would be pretty good for getting things like pizza and bread on and off. I picked up some stones from a place Old Dave told me about--New Mexico Clay. I'm not at the house now so I can't measure them but I think they were about 10 inch diameter which works pretty well on the small.

Spring Chicken,[p]I use the BGE 9" ceramic deep dish pizza pan for my indirects on the small. I place it on the regular grate, and then use my raised grid to elevate the food into the dome area. Works perfectly, plus if you wrap it in aluminum foil, it doubles as a drip pan![p]Plus, you can get it right from BGE without any searching or need for modifications.[p]Tonia

    Tonia,
Is your elevated grid home made? Bolts on a regular grid? firebricks? or something storebought that I don't know about?[p]Thanks,
    Bob

bobbyb,[p]Raised grid is made from stainless steel bolts and washers. But, you could easily raise the grid with split firebricks (what we did before "upgrading" to the bolt/washer system).[p]Tonia
