me and my b/f are headed to San Antonio next week and we will be staying @ Westin on the riverwalk, does anyone have any recommendations with regards to restaurants on the riverwalk, we are definitely doing the Hard Rock but would like to know of a good mexican restaurant close by and also a good Italian place.... some friends of ours mentioned the Guadalajara Grill in La Villita, anyone have any knowledge of it?

thanks in advance for yur help! HUGS :)

    Hi Ashley,

Boudreaux's on the River is excellent for a higher end dinner. Great service, delicious food. I've been about 5 times now and have never been disappointed.

For Mexican food, there is lots to choose from in S.A. My hubby and I prefer the Mexican food that is NOT on the River Walk. You will find a better atmosphere this way, better food and better prices. We love La Fogata and La Fonda. Both have beautiful patio areas as well.

Have fun in San Antonio! It's a great place to visit. Be sure to take a tour on the River Barges. The Westin on the River is BEAUTIFUL! Have a great time

  • I highly recommend LaFonda.

I've never been to Lulu's but Chef Wil just got back from San Antonio and he went there twice so it must be good. What could be wrong with a 3# cinnamon roll???

Also, try breakfast at The Guenther House.

Be sure to visit the market area and MiTierra's.

    Have fun.....

After seeing it on Diner, Drive Ins and Dives, I really want to try Dough Pizzeria Napoletana. They have had tons of other good reviews as well.

I would stay away from Mexican food on the riverwalk. You can get better, cheaper elsewhere.

OOPS! I spelled the restaurant's name wrong. It's Boudro's, and it really is great.

we are definitely doing this place....there pizza sounds yummy :)
  • A short ride to Lockhart (1hr -15min) will get you to some pretty famous Texas BBQ places. Lockhart has Smitty's, Black's, and Kreuz's.

I haven't been to Kreuz's so can't comment. I prefer Black's and my bride prefers Smitty's. If you decide to take the ride, a stop at Smitty's is a must if only to walk through and check it out. The creamed corn at Black's is mightyfine and the brisket is good at both - we like to order the moist over the lean. If you decide to eat at Smitty's bring your own fork - kind of crazy but they only give you a plastic spoon.

    Have a good trip

I agree. I'm in San Antonio....

You might want to travel the newly opened Museum reach of the Riverwalk. It runs from downtown to the old Pearl Brewery; now the site of many interesting things like the Culinary Institute of America, a Farmers Market and some interesting restaurants like La Gloria Ice House (Mexican Street Food).

    Hope this helps.

Not local, but have visited a few times.

For sure the Guenther House. Not on Riverwalk- but interesting to visit. We were there for a brunch/ lunch, but I bet breakfast would be fantastic also.

You asked about Italian. We ate at Peasansos on the Riverwalk. Very nice meal. Quality food & service. Recommend reservation there or you may not get seated. We saw several disappointed couples getting turned away. http://www.paesanosriverwalk.com/

A sister restaurant of theirs, and opposite end of the spectrum, is Rio Rio Cantina. I am sure others are steering you correctly about Mex food OFF the Riverwalk. However, if you just want something "right there"- we enjoyed this place- especially to enjoy a beverage & snacks and/or meal right at water's edge. The Naked Iguana is their bar tucked back and had good Happy Hour rates, but as I recall you had to sit AT the bar for the specials- couldn't take that discounted drink out to the river's edge, which makes sense. If you like Midori at all, give their Green Iguana Margie a try. We went back whenever we were thirsty.

FYI, if you are used to Vegas where you can walk around with any drink you want, SA is a little different. There is a place or two to purchase margies in plastic cups (one place under a bridge)that you CAN carry around Riverwalk. You also can carry around bottles of beer that you got at your hotel. However, you can NOT take drinks (say from ****'s Last Resort or Joe's Crab Shack or from the Rio Rio Cantina) and carry them around with you.

For BBQ on the Riverwalk - stroll by The County Line and scope out everyone else's plate. They have some HUGE serving portions- so trust me when I say SHARE a platter !!! Let me repeat that... SHARE a platter !!! We saw what we were getting ourselves into b4 we ordered, and had much pitty for others seated near us that didn't plan ahead and didn't have fridges to take doggie bags to.

I would say stay away from the County Line. There was nothing impressive about them except the amount of food you got last time we went. And the price.

Everyone agrees, Riverwalk Mexican is bad. Dough is worth the cab or bus ride up from the river. I'd also say Bohanan's for fine dining or go north on the river to the Pearl Brewery, nice places there too.

Don't forget to ask about the basement if you go to the Alamo. They love that one.

I will confirm a few things that have already been said.

I went to Mi Tierra for Mexican last summer and thought it was great. Not on the riverwalk, but 2 a 3 block walk.

The most famous barbecue in Texas is in Lockhart, and it is worth an hour drive through the hill country to check it out.
