Just thought I would share.
I have made a spacer to put under the cap to control the heat without using the daisy wheel. I found the daisy cap to be smelly and messy. I took a piece of brass welding rod bent into a vee and place it under the cap to hold it up slightly and it works excellent. I made three, one each out of 1/16", 3/32" and 1/8". I use the 3/32" for most of my cooking. I can regulate the temperature real well with this setup. If I want to smoke in the 150 to 200 degree I use the 1/16 spacer, for cooking in the 200 to 350 degree range I use the 3/32 spacer and I use the 1/8 spacer for when I cook in excess of 350 degrees. The daisy wheel condensed moisture and it ran down the outside making the egg ugly and the daisy wheel required frequent washing to keep the smell down. With this system no condensation no ugly no smell and I found it to be much easier to regulate the temperature. I use the 3/32 spacer with the bottom slide set about 3/4 inch open for 95% of my cooking. A chocolate cake or cornbread cooked on the Egg is some kinda' good. I love my Big Green Egg and two of our friends have them now. The Big Green Egg rules.

David Maner,
You can also use the "rain cap" as it is referred to now and just tilt it slightly off the chimney to control the temp. That is what we had to do back in the Good Ol' days.[p]Of course you could also just take your daisy wheel and place it inside the egg after each cook, that keeps the junk from building up too much. As to the smell, well I never got up close and sniffed mine, and it's never stunk from a distance that I'm aware of. I realize that some people's senses are more attuned than the rest of us though. I have a good friend who's wife claims that his eyelashes make too much noise when he blinks and it keeps her up at night before he closes his eyes for the night.
