12 hour Butt - WAY too early

Put a 7 pounder on last night at 10:00. All the usual hardware and dome steady at 135 to 140 all night. Checked it every hour and a half. Problem is that it never really hit a plateau for any length of time and looks like it will hit 200 at about 10:00 this morning. Dinner isn't 'till 6:00 or so this evening. I have never had a butt finish that quickly. Archives had one comment that butt can do the "cooler" rest thing for 8 hours. Is that right, or should I pull earlier and then re-heat this evening? No two butts are ever the same. Smells great and if we weren't having dinner guests, we'd be having brunch soon ! :)[p]Thanks for your any advice.[p]Dave

Gandolf,[p]You mean 235 - 240? What the temp now? I've had a brisket finish in 12 hours but never a butt that big...

SmokinBoB,[p]Yeah, I meant 235 to 240. Thermometer was calibrated, etc. Butt is now 198. Just put it in the cooler. Figure I want to do that no matter what I do next. I've had them finish that early when I pumped the temp to 300 or more for the last four or five hours when I needed to rush it, but not at a steady less than 250.[p]Smells and looks great. I figure the worst that can happen is that I pull and re-heat later if it can't rest for 8 hours in the cooler. I've had them in the cooler for 5 hours before and was steaming hot then, but 8 kinda worries me.[p]Thanks

Gandolf,[p]By the way, I figured about 16 to 18 hours when I put it on last night. Some have even taken 20. ??

Gandolf,[p]Of all of the cooler tactics I've seen, Hot bricks in foil, milk jugs with hot water etc, the one with the most potential for a long holding time was an electric blanket. the guy had a polder cable into one of the butts, they were foiled and wrapped in the blanket, and into a big cooler. He dialed the thermostat, and kept his eye on the polder.[p]~thirdeye~

Lawn Ranger,[p]Mornin' Mike. Yeah, I'm still at it. Gotta show off those Lawn Ranger accessories you know! I keep showing up here keeping track of you guys, but needed some advice this morning.[p]I think the butt will be great, too. Just have to decide when I'm going to pull. Haven't decided if I will pull and re-heat, but am kinda leaning in that direction. It's in the cooler, so I know I have a few hours to make up my mind.[p]
