I'm turning 33 tomorrow, and tonight, my wife presented me with my b-day present.[p]"it's in the back of the truck [suv]" she said. Hmmm, i thought, what could this be?[p]She had wrapped a few goodies, and i opened them one by one, first, in the living room, having no idea what was up.[p]Hmm, a nice heat-mit. Hmmm, a grill-grate-clamp, hey it says BGE on it... Just like the [pizza] stone, what the... (!)[p]It had been over a year since i looked at BBQs in earnest, the impending birth of our (now 8 month old) first child motivated our funds and focus on getting the house ready for him, and the 'dream grill/smoker' quest was shelved.[p]Until tonight! I'm so excited. i've ammassed a few decent bbq/slow-low/grilling books and have been limping along with our 'nice' gas 4 burner from bbq galore, but wanting to return to lump-charcoal.[p]the easy cleanup, coal-saving, quick to heat, and versatility of the BGE gives me a huge smile on my face.[p]I'm off to read the forum for a while, and being a Nothern VA resident, look forward to the meet in MD in May.[p]:D[p]Hakalugi

Hakalugi,[p]Glad to see you made on board! You will love the Egg and your wife will love it when you do the cooking. Our Son (now 2 yrs old), loves steak, lamb, scallops, chicken and almost anything from the Egg![p]Enjoy ... you suffered long enough with the gasser![p]Smokey

    Hakalugi,
Welcome Fernando,[p]Now you have another family member. Your gonna love how well the egg makes BBQ. It's the best there is. Also bakes like a brick oven for fantastic breads and pizza. Try that with a gasser- speaking of, I haven't used my We*** for almost 2 years. I'll clean it up and sell it to a weekend griller this spring. Thinking of selling my Holl*** gasser too. [p]Some folks are always in a rush. The egg helps us to relax. We fire it up and smell the smoke, feel the heat grow and anticipate the cooking experience. Time to relax and enjoy life. Make some great BBQ. You have a wife that really cares about you. Thank her many times.[p]Have fun.

Hakalugi, your wife is a keeper. You lucky guy! You will never regret it. She on the otherhand will ask herself, "What did I get him involved with?" LOL Welcome, you will find lots of comapny up there in Northern Virgina including the Nature Ranch where you can pick up Dizzy Pig rubs.

Wise One,[p]Just ordered a few rubs from DP, i'm only a few miles east of Chris, so i'll look forward to NatureBoy (?) in May.[p]Thanks![p]Hakalugi[p]PS - i got so excited at the end of the meal, forgot to take a "done" picture (of beer can chix and 3 new york strips, done after, while the chix rested - got the BGE hot again by venting to get some searing on steaks - all worked great first time ! )[p]the chix was truly smoked 'pink' my wife and brother-in-law were shocked at the smoke ring and taste. (we used a cumin/paprika/coriander rub, based on an Alton Brown mix) but the Egg was in full-force:

  • mad max beyond eggdome,[p]i'm in arlingon, clarendon to be exact. wife: yep, she's a keeper :)[p]funny, when i was reading about smokers last year, i had book marked more weber bullet pages, b/c i thought the BGE might be too much to spend with Jack on the way.[p]She mistakenly remembered the BGE, and bought it - very generous. Man - am i glad she remembered the 'wrong' one - b/c i love it, and the journey has just begun.[p]look forward to leaning from you guys (gals?)[p]hakalugi

New Bob,[p]I forgot to take 'in progress' pix, and the skies opened up at the end of the cooking, so no digi-cam outside for the finished product on the grill. the beer-can-chicken was smoked, crispy, juicy and wonderful. The steaks were very tender, but the hickory smoke (although not as strong as earlier in the process --steaks were put on about 1:40 minutes after the chicken started and as i pulled it off) may have been distracting - or a bit too similar in flavor to the chix. (steak seasoning: only kosher salt, fresh blk pepper, and garlic powder) - don't get me wrong, there we're no left-overs :) just being critical :)[p]but my wife is pleased the green matches her patio-chair covers:[p]thanks for the kind words :)[p]Hakalugi[p]

  • The Naked Whiz,[p]she got me a medium (15" inside dia) ? i think.[p]i looked at ways to put several racks of ribs in a holder (like an upside-down v-rack) and looks like i can fit 4 little hens with the beer-can-chix rack, i've seen, so i'm keeping it.[p]first meal: one beer-can-chix, and 3 NY Strips (i prefer rib-eyes/delmonico's, but on short notice, went to safeway, and that was the best looking cut on hand)[p]i'm already planning our first 'real' cook-out:[p]ribs: smoked the day ahead., chilled overnight. day of: 4 chix in BGE, and i use my 4-burner gas grill to 'warm' my ribs and sauce them.[p]i spoke to an acquaintence who has a BGE and he joked: "i use may gas grill now as a warmer, and not for much else" - hehe, maybe for veggies, and corn grilling, too :)[p]thanks for posting,[p]Hakalugi

  • WooDoggies,[p]Thanks John. So far so good. [p]just printed my registration form :)[p]see you then.[p]Fernando
  • Clay Q,[p]Funny you should mention those points. the smell of the hickory smoking on the coals brought back camping memories from childhood. [p]she was pleased with the meal (understatement) i'm just excited it was more than edible being my first try.[p]we see much of the same attractions you do in the "process" of the Q (time to relax, bonding with growing son, we love to cook) [p]we both work many, many hours being a DC family (expensive place!) and a gift like this means a lot - not only for what it'll do, but how it'll bring us together.[p]being a techie, i love the 'net communities like this, some of the most value-rich content specific exchanges occur in communities like this. a good thing.[p]-Fernando[p]
  • Smokey,[p]"Enjoy ... you suffered long enough with the gasser!"[p]funny a year ago, i was trying to convince her why our very convenient and expensive gas grill was only a half measure.[p]to her "charcaol" meant lighter fluid and it's taste/smell (she could be a sommelier with that nose of hers) so she wasn't sold. but as i read her more and more info on smoking and lump charcoal, and no fluid, it sank in.[p]man, i'm glad she made the leap. (man i'm glad i got her good stuff for her birthday last month!!) :)[p]hakalugi
