Bucket head wet/dry vac for ashes
Lit
Posts: 9,053
I had seen all the posts on here about using shop vacs for the ashes. For $19 I figured I would try the bucket head vac from home depot and it works really good. The hose fits inside the large bottom vent and worked great. On the small and mini I had to scoop the ashes forward and then use the vacuum. Overall a great $19 investment.

Birthday coming up next week. I suspect a six gallon-size Rigid wet-dry vac will be coming to join the egg-corps!

I use a shop vac - I think it is the best solution.
but....
One time I thought coals were out and it turned out they were not; it melted the plastic hose. Then about 10 minutes later I smell smoke and the filter inside the vaccum was burning.
It was a close call - but it did not ruin the vacuum - and I learned I was an idiot. -
I looked at those as well. Ended up buying a small shop-vac with the same size small hose. It works OK but the hose is so small it jams up with small lump all the time. I have switched back to my larger vac with the big hose.
I sure like the bucket idea and I wish it used the larger hose.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
I have a big shop vac and bought a package of attachments intended for car detailing---lots of diff tips & nozzles, perfect for the mini. Sure, big pieces stick to the outside, but they're easy enough to pull off.

It pays to be sure that the coals are completely cold

I normally just open the Egg and grab the lump grate, shake it a little and lift it out with the big pieces of lump still on the grate. Then I vac from the top but I do have issues with the lump jamming in the smaller size hose. The larger vac is so much easier, esp on the Large and XL Eggs.
I agree, the smaller one would be great if you only try and vac from the lower vent.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
I went to Home Depot expecting to get the 6 gallon Rigid but it was bigger than I expected. I am running out of room for toys so I tried the bucket head. It works great for cleaning from the bottom vent but I haven't tried sucking up lump yet. If I remember correctly home depot had a 9 gallon rigid that was only like $5 more than the 6 gallon and about the same size.
