Use a golf tee to plug the temperature hole in my egg. [p]Wind and cold shredded my old cheap-o cover for my eggs. So they are sitting on the deck with the temperature hole exposed and letting in mositure. We all know that mositure makes wet lump and possibly mold in your egg. [p]Just tried out the golf tee this morning and it works great.[p]Doug

    Smoked Signals,
Just curious. Why is your temp hole exposed? Do you remove your temp gauge between cooks? My large has been sitting outside uncovered since 1998, and the only time mine is out is to test it for accuracy, then back in it goes. I don't think I am getting any, or at least much, moisture through this very small hole. Never had a mold problem except for the time I forgot to put the rain cap on. Tthat was bad. You do have me interested in your idea though.

Smoked Signals,[p]How would you like a true blue (actually green) Big Green Egg cover, for a large?[p]I've got one that is getting ready to become landfill. It is in great shape, it is just that I don't use it.[p]Jethro
  • Jethro,
    Cool ... email me.

  • Crab leg,
I noticed that my last cook was very hard to light after a couple days of rain. I don't think much moisture is getting in the egg ... but definitly more then when I had them covered. I have never had mold becuase my eggs don't sit for very long between cooks ... I just know that now that spring and summer are coming that people will start to complain about mold in the egg.[p]Yes I remove the temp probe each time because it is not sealed and gets water vapor in the dial and makes it hard to read. I don't use the clip on the inside either ... I use it on the outside to space the probe to the right distance.[p]Doug

Smoked Signals, Drill a hole thru wine cork. Insert stem into thermo. When done cooking pull and place with meat. Thermo will last a long time this way. Put sheetrock nail in hole to keep rain out. Easy cover with contractor lawn bag. Cooker will shut down quicker also: just don't try and pull nail when hot. If real lazy like me test thermo by putting digital thermometer into hole to test temp on the fly. Forget about the boiling routine. Good luck.
